Writing a book has made Alex Marks realise that the role of the marketing manager as we know it will become obselete.

They say everyone has got a book in them ? metaphorically speaking, of course. I first succumbed to the idea that I might be the next Stephen King when backpacking around the world at the end of the last century. Too much time, too much Mary-Jane. However, my plot, which revolved around a middle-aged serial killer and the data protection act, failed to ignite the literary passions of London?s editorial elite.

If JK Rowling had penned a novel called Harry Potter and the Mitten of Wool, it couldn?t have been worse received.

Fast forward a few years ? well, a decade or more ? and I do actually find myself writing a book. And someone is paying me to do it. Wow! Sadly it?s not about serial killers but it is about social media. I shamelessly plug it here but, more to the point, I wanted to share what a real education it has been to write it.

I thought I knew about social media ? and it turns out I did, but not as much as I believed. We seem to be going through a transitional phase at the moment. Many marketers are still trying to work out what this social media thing is and what it means for their marketing plans. Well, I have news: if you try to bolt it on to your existing approach it will be doomed to failure.

In fact I would go as far as to say that the role of the marketing manager as we know it is going to become obsolete. Why? Because in the not too distant future the consumer will control much more of the brand. Or at least become a willing and equal partner in its development.? You will become a manager of customer conversations. And finally, after all these years, when we say that ?the customer is at the heart of our business?, we may be speaking the truth.

Maybe Tiger Woods did not expect Steve Williams to keep up his very public outcry about being sacked by the former world No. 1 after a dozen years as a player-caddie duo. After Adam Scott won the WGC Bridgestone Invitational last Sunday, Woods says he sent a congratulatory message to both victors.

?I sent Stevie a nice text after completion, play, congratulating him on his win. It was good to see them go out there and play as well as they did,? Woods said.

He added, ?I was happy to see Stevie and Adam win. Adam has been a friend of mine, and same with Stevie.?

?I?m not going to speculate on Steve. Those are obviously his feelings and his emotions and his decision to say what he wants to say,? he said.

He made it clear that the analysis of the break up and the resulting fallout has been out of his hands.

The Difference Between Venture Capital and Working Capital Why ...

It is not uncommon for business owners suffering through a cash flow crunch to determine that bringing on an equity partner or investor, such as a venture capitalist or angel investor, will solve all their problems. Unfortunately, during my 28 years in the alternative business finance industry, I have seen many businesses fail due to this kind of thinking.

Specifically, these owners did not understand the difference between equity financing and working capital. I?ve seen good, profitable businesses blow themselves up because of cash flow problems, and entrepreneurs lose ownership and control of their companies before they had a chance to succeed. A lot of this grief could have been prevented had the owners opened their minds and taken the time to seriously look at all the financing options that are available to them.

Often, what these businesses really need is simply a boost in or access to more working capital. ?There is a big difference between increasing working capital and bringing on an equity partner,? says Davis Vaitkunas, an Investment Banker and President of Bond Capital in Vancouver, BC. ?

?While owners suffering from cash flow problems may think their only solution is a large injection of cash from an equity investor, that could very well be the worst possible thing to do,? says Vaitkunas. ?In fact, the math will demonstrate that the owner who funds 100 percent of his or her working capital with equity earns a lower return on owner?s equity.?

Working Capital vs. Equity Financing

At this point it might be helpful to clarify some terms. For starters, ?working capital? is the money used to pay your business bills until the cash from sales (or accounts receivable) has actually been received. Terms for sales vary among industries, but normally a business can expect to wait somewhere between 30 and 60 days to be paid. Therefore, as a general rule, your business should retain two times its monthly sales in the form of working capital. You can increase the amount of available working capital by retaining profits, improving supplier credit, or using alternative financing vehicles.

?Equity financing,? meanwhile, is money a business acquires by selling some of the ownership shares in the business. In many cases, this can also involve giving up control in some or all of the most important business decisions. This can be a good thing if the investor brings in some unique expertise or synergy to the relationship. However, the terms of an equity investment can be complicated, so it is important to completely understand them and have good legal counsel. Think of it as a business marriage.

According to Vaitkunas, ?Businesses should use equity to finance long-term assets and working capital to finance short-term assets. You want to apply the matching principle and match the length of the asset life to the length of liability life.? A long-term asset takes more than one 12-month business cycle to repay, while a short-term asset will normally be repaid in less than 12 months.

When to Dilute Equity

?Equity is a precious commodity,? Vaitkunas stresses. ?It should only be sold when there is no other option. The equity partner should bring experience and/or contacts that cannot be found elsewhere.? The best strategy is to secure equity financing at a time when you can negotiate and preferably dictate some of the terms. Ideally, absolute control should remain with the owner.

Timing is everything when it comes to equity financing, Vaitkunas continues. ?Sometimes it?s best to simply take your time and wait for the best value proposition. While you?re waiting, you can grow within your means using short-term liabilities.?

It?s usually not a good idea to look for equity when a business is new, struggling to earn a profit or suffering from a setback. Unfortunately this is exactly the time when many business owners start thinking they need to ?find an investor.? This process can take a lot of time and consume a lot of energy, which are taken away from the business, and this can have an aggravating and compounding effect on the existing problems.

As a rule of thumb, equity partners should only be sought once a company has a proven track record of sales and profitability and there is an identifiable and specific need for the money. Then, it is important to show how an injection of capital will create even greater profits and higher sales. A business that has a proven level of profitability, some historical sales growth and even more future sales growth potential is a much more attractive investment to potential equity partners.

Financing Working Capital

Working capital shortages are a short-term problem that can be financed with senior debt or mezzanine debt. In the alternative, short-term financing is also available from factoring or A/R financing providers who look to certain accounts receivable and inventory assets as collateral. Gene Therapy Fights a Tough-to-Treat Leukemia: Study (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 10 (HealthDay News) -- A small group of patients with an advanced form of tough-to-treat leukemia appears to have benefited from a radical new form of immune therapy, researchers say.

To treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) that had not responded to other therapies, scientists inserted a genetically modified version of the patients' own T cells (immune cells) into three patients to specifically target the CLL cells. Almost a year later, the patients are in complete or partial remission.

This is the first time scientists have successfully used gene transfer therapy to kill cancer cells, and the results might be applicable to other forms of cancer, including ovarian and lung tumors, the researchers said.

"This approach to adaptive therapy with T cells is different and better [than previous immunotherapy attempts] because the cells are long-lived once they're transferred and active over a period of time," said William Chambers, director of the Clinical Cancer Research and Immunology Program at the American Cancer Society. "And it seems that a small number of them actually have a big impact," he noted. "This is going to prove useful and important."

The challenge now is to find the right target on other cancers, he added.

The researchers, who presented their findings Aug. 10 in the New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine, removed the patients' own T cells and then added an artificial receptor that specifically targeted CD19, a protein found on these types of cancer cells.

These engineered T cells, which were re-introduced after chemotherapy, also were programmed to produce even more killer cells.

"This turned every genetically modified T cell into a tumor-seeking missile," explained Bruce Levine, co-author of both papers and associate professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

In the case of a 64-year-old man, whose experience is chronicled in the NEJM article, T cells started killing tumor cells within two weeks of the first treatment.

Four weeks out, he showed no evidence of leukemia at all.

All the patients are now 10, 11 and 12 months out from treatment.

The gene-modified T cells destroyed about two pounds of tumor in each patient in about a month. One T cell was able to kill about 1,000 cancer cells, the authors said.

"The results were quite striking considering that each of these patients had been undergoing the best conventional medicine could give," said Levine. "When you look at the responses these patients achieved and the time frame in which they achieved them, it's extraordinarily remarkable."

Chambers was impressed that the T cells were active for as long as six months.

"That's important because a cancer like this can go all through the body and be hidden in different places," he said. "One would presume that you wouldn't have to go back and do a bunch of continuing treatments."

But there was one downside to treatment, Chambers said. In one patient, normal immune cells were also affected.

CLL, which typically strikes in middle age, is diagnosed in almost 15,000 men and women in the United States each year, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute. More than 4,000 adults die of it a year. Current treatments include chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants and biologics (such as rituximab).

For now, the new treatment is only available for patients in clinical trials for leukemia and lymphoma, and the researchers need to get a longer-term view before it can be recommended for broader use.

Their next step is to try the approach in patients who have other CD19-positive tumors, such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma and acute lymphocytic leukemia, and in children who don't respond to conventional treatments for pediatric leukemia.

Bethesda has released a new trailer for its latest release, developed by id Software. The below trailer for Rage is titled Uprising, and gives us a pretty decent idea of what to expect and how the game will look and feel.

Despite the game getting a lot of bad press for looking like the illegitimate love-child of Fallout and Borderlands, this trailer certainly put me in a heightened state of anticipation for the game?s release on October 4th in North America and October 7th in Europe.

Now for a bit of bad news regarding the game. id Software?s studio head, John Carmack, revealed this weekend at Quakecon that the game will require a 22GB HDD install on the Xbox 360. Carmack explained:

On the 360 we don?t have a partial install option; it?s all or nothing ? It means you have to install 21 to 22GB of stuff which takes a long time, but if you?ve got it and you play it on the 360 that?s the way to go.

It hasn?t been confirmed if the PS3 will have the same kind of requirements for its single Blu-Ray disc, compared to the Xbox 360?s three discs ? two for the campaign and a third for the multiplayer.

Gold at record, silver surges as other prices fall (AP)

Gold and silver prices surged Monday, industrial metals and crop values fell, as investors fled to assets considered safer during times of economic turmoil.

Gold prices hit a record high in the first day of trading after Standard & Poor's on Friday cut the long-term credit rating of the U.S. by one notch to AA+ from AAA.

The credit downgrade sparked fears of a weaker U.S. economy. As a result the price of industrial metals like copper fell as investors bet that factory orders will fall. Crop prices also declined on worries about weaker demand.

"How do you spell `fear" these days? AA+ is how, apparently," Jon Nadler, senior analyst at Kitco Metals Inc. North America wrote in a note to clients.

Gold for December delivery gained $61.40 to close at $1,713.20 an ounce. Silver for September delivery rose $1.169 to settle at $39.38 an ounce.

Gold has nearly doubled in price since the start of 2009, and its climb accelerated this summer. Still, adjusted for inflation, an ounce of gold remains below its 1980 peak of $850, which translates into about $2,400 in today's dollars.

Industrial metals didn't fare nearly as well. Concerns over economic growth means factories could be placing fewer orders for copper and palladium, which are used in a range of products from automobiles to iPads.

Copper for September delivery fell 15.55 cents to settle at $3.9615 per pound. September palladium fell $13.25 to $728.50, and October platinum gained $4.50 to settle at $1,723.60.

Wheat for September delivery fell 22.50 cents to settle at $6.5650 per bushel. December corn fell 17 cents to $6.86 per bushel and November soybeans fell 24.5 cents to $13.115 per bushel.

In energy trading, Oil plunged to its lowest price of the year Monday on concerns about the slowing global economy and future demand for oil and gas.

In the past two weeks, oil has dropped nearly $16 per barrel. Analysts think oil will remain volatile this week as traders look for some clarity about the direction of the world economy and demand for oil.

Traders also are concerned about debt problems in Europe, where the European Central Bank said it will intervene to prop up the sagging economies of Spain and Italy.

Benchmark crude for September delivery dropped $5.57 to settle at $81.31 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Heating oil lost 14 cents to settle at $2.8017 per gallon. Gasoline futures fell 11.36 cents to $2.6916 per gallon and natural gas settled gave up 0.6 cents to settle at $3.935 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Grammy Award-winning album "Back to Black", which first hit the top spot in 2007, dislodged fellow soul diva Adele's 21 from the summit while Winehouse's debut release, "Frank", also recharted at number five.
