Hurricane Sandy Hammers Small Businesses: How to Prepare for ...

Residents on the East Coast of the U.S. continue cleaning up following Hurricane Sandy, and small businesses have been especially hard hit. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are used to the unexpected, and it doesn?t take a hurricane to disrupt your business operations. Here?s an update of how small businesses have been affected by this particular disaster and more about how your business can stay prepared for the unexpected emergency.

Eye of the Hurricane

Businesses weather the storm. As seen by this sampling of experiences from up and down the eastern sea board, small businesses can be affected in many ways by huge weather emergencies like a hurricane. Weathering a widespread, unexpected event depends upon flexibility and preparing for the worst. Those businesses most affected by Monday?s storm were those susceptible to storm damage or whose employees lived too far away to get to work. Businesses were also impacted by the degree weather forced customers to stay away. CBS Money Watch

Data drowns in deluge. Your business doesn?t need to be exposed to the elements or even located anywhere near a natural disaster to feel its effects. If your small business depends on data centers, like these damaged by flooding as a result of Hurricane Sandy, it?s important to be sure that backups are available. Data Center Knowledge

Resources offer road to recovery. Many small business were affected by Hurricane Sandy, as they can be by any natural disaster. Fortunately, there is help to get your business up and running again. Business mentor and angel investor Amy Rees Anderson shares this comprehensive list of resources that can help your company cope after disaster strikes. Forbes

State of Preparedness

Emergencies come in many forms. You don?t need a Hurricane with 90 mile an hour winds to threaten your small business. Sometimes a faulty network node at your Internet provider will do. In this scenario, O2, a UK broadband provider, suffered an outage affecting 2 million users, 10 percent of its customers, with many small businesses claiming they were unable to operate as a result. Make sure your service provider doesn?t leave you hanging. bOnline Blog

Prepare for your next disaster. Just like homeowners, small business owners must prepare for the worst. For many business owners in the wake of Hurricane Sandy may have found out first hand how important emergency preparedness is. For other small business owners, it?s an important wake up call about steps everyone should take to protect their investments. SBA.gov

Better safe than sorry. As blogger Arthur Piccio observes, disasters that threaten your business can come in all shapes and sizes, from a gigantic hurricane to a computer outage or data loss affecting only your hosting or data storage company. In many cases this can be really bad news for your business, so why don?t more businesses take it seriously? Here?s a long list of suggestions that will help you get prepared. UPrinting

Another Day at the Office

Don?t confuse urgency with emergency. If you don?t know the difference between these two ideas, you might face a danger more insidious than any mother nature can throw your way. Martin Zwilling teaches us about the dangers of managers or leaders who can make every day and every situation an emergency and how this behavior can slowly sap any business of its strength. When you declare a state of emergency for your business, make sure the threat is real. Startup Professionals Musings

10 Farm-To-Table Restaurants In Vancouver, Canada | Gadling.com

, it was apparent many restaurants are trying to create sustainable, farm-to-table menus. It's a great city if you're an eco-conscious traveler due to the many options for any price level. To help guide you, here are some top picks for morally conscious cuisine in Vancouver.

I'm not sure there are any other restaurants in the city that take creative sustainability to the level Diva at the Met does. Chef Hamid Salimian and his team enjoy foraging when they can, even for the organic matters like stones, driftwood and torched bark that make up the snack plates. Chef Salimian visualizes what most can not even fathom, while remaining as organic as possible. For example, a slice of chicken bacon from a biodiverse farm might be brined and smoked for days and come on a stone slab, while a squid ink-infused mussel bread will be topped with roe and made to look like coral. Seafood comes from Ocean Wise-certified providers, while produce comes from farms with high crop biodiversity. In terms of farms, most of their produce comes from North Arm Farm, Sapo Bravo, Glourish Organics and Cherry Lane Farm. Although an upscale restaurant, meals can be affordable, with prices ranging from $19 to $38 for an entree, to the five-course tasting menu at $55 and the seven-course tasting menu at $75.

Cibo Trattoria
900 Seymour Street

Like Diva at the Met, Cibo Trattoria immerses you in a relaxed, romantic ambiance. However, while Diva focuses on surreal gastronomy, Cibo Trattoria serves up rustic Italian fare with a modern twist. What's really interesting at this venue is they change their menu daily, focusing on what's fresh and in-season. While certain meats and cheeses come from Italy to get authenticity, much of their ingredients are locally sourced from British Columbia farms, with deliveries coming daily. For example, their radishes come from Aldergrove while their watercress is purchased from Hannah Brooks Farm in Langley. Typical dishes may include a handmade paccheri pasta with meatballs, oregano, San Marzano tomatoes and ricotta salada, crispy ox tongue with marinated heirloom peppers or roast bone marrow garlic and parsley bread crumbs and apple salad. They also do seasonally inspired dishes for fresh ingredients, like pumpkin ravioli with chili, garlic, marjoram and amaretti. You can sample local wines from the Okanagan and Fraser valleys. And although they have to reprint their menus daily, all printouts are done on recycled paper, which is also recycled after use. The menu includes affordable small plates as well as pastas for about $15 and entrees for less than $30.

c restaurant C Restaurant
1600 Howe Street

As the founding restaurant in the Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise Program, C Restaurant was one of the first in Vancouver to deconstruct seafood supply lines, dealing directly with the fisherman to ensure a product that is of the highest quality and ethical sensitivity. Since the restaurant focuses on seasonal freshness, there really isn't a signature dish. Instead, its signature is to utilize sustainable seafood and local produce as much as possible. Not only is their food sustainable, but their wine program features vintages from British Columbia's Okanagan Region, as well as global wines made with an organic and biodynamic philosophy. The restaurant is contemporary, with entrees averaging $30.

Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro
572 Davie Street

You don't need to eat at an upscale restaurant to enjoy a sustainable meal. And with Vancouver having myriad sushi establishments, it would be wrong not to include one on this list. Located in Yaletown, Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro doesn't simply churn out rolls, they focus on high-quality cuisine and fresh ingredients, employing only serious Japanese chefs. Ingredients include wild seafood, natural beef, free-range chicken and heritage KUROBUTA pork, all locally-sourced from British Columbia farms. If you're in the mood for a local drink, Juno serves sakes from the Granville Island Artisan Sake Maker and BC "Vintners Quality Alliance" (VQA) wines.

raincity grill Raincity Grill
1193 Denman Street

This high-end restaurant opened in 1992 with a menu that featured locally-sourced food. Eventually, Raincity Grill also added their signature 100-mile menu, which showcased items with ingredients from within 100-miles of Vancouver.

"Our menu is a tribute to the local farmers, fisherman and producers of British Columbia," it states on their homepage. "The Chef sources out the best organic, sustainable products available ... 'Farm-to-table' has become a recent catchphrase but at Raincity Grill it has been a philosophy for twenty years."

Some specific sustainable menu items include "Brioche French Toast" with Fraser Valley compote and house-made huckleberry syrup, a "Spinach And Berry" salad with North Arm Farm spinach, local berries and Okanagan goat's cheese and "Fraser Valley Duck Breast" with wild coastal huckleberries. If you're on a budget, check out their $10 fish and chips window. Libations are also in line with their 'go local' philosophy, as the restaurant serves wines from the Pacific West Coast.

Edible Canada Bistro
1596 Johnston Street

Located on Granville Island, Edible Canada's bistro does an excellent job of supporting the farm-to-feast philosophy. While their food is fresh and locally grown, even using onsite plant boxes of herbs and produce and making use of the adjacent public market, their efforts extend beyond eating. In fact, the venue features tabletops made of recycled fir tree, hostess stands created with discarded beach cedar and two complimentary charging stations for electric vehicles. As for drinks, they're spearheading the revolution of offering wine on tap, an environmentally-friendly way to serve vino as it eliminates the packaging and, because 27% of glass is recovered for recycling, stops millions of bottles from going to the landfill. Menu items range from $11 to $28, while their bacon window also offers inexpensive eats.

the templeton The Templeton
1087 Granville Street

Located in Vancouver's lively entertainment district, The Templeton is an old-fashioned retro diner serving comfort food in a sustainable way. Most ingredients are organic and locally sourced, and there are an array of vegetarian and vegan options, like lentil loaf, tofu omelets, Portobello mushroom burgers and veggie bacon. If you're a carnivore, The Templeton features organic, free-range and non-medicated meats. Best of all, this venue is cheap to moderately priced with $10 burgers, $10 fish and chips and $16 steaks. Finish it off with a $5 deep-fried Mars bar.

Trafalgar's Bistro
2603 West 16th Avenue

Trafalgars Bistro and adjacent Sweet Obsession bakery in Kitsilano are pioneers when it comes to sustainability. In the summer of 2011, the venues launched a recycling and composting initiative that was the first of its kind by installing a Green Good composting system. By doing this, they were able to eliminate all organic waste going to landfill, with 99% of the remaining trash being recycled. Additionally, their strong association with Inner City Farms means they can make use of their compost in Vancouver's urban gardens. In terms of food, their seafood is certified Ocean Wise, all meats are unmedicated and free-range and produce is almost always locally sourced. While the ambiance suggests fine dining, it's actually a casual and affordable place to eat, with entrees ranging from $17 to $30 and a three-course menu for $30.

blue water cafe + raw bar Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar
1095 Hamilton Street

Located in Yaletown, the casual yet elegant Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar has always focused on farm-to-table and ocean-to-table. All seafood is delivered to their kitchen daily and only the absolute freshest, exceptional quality fish and shellfish are selected. Most of them are line caught, trap caught or sustainably farmed in British Columbia. During the month of February, they even feature an annual Unsung Heroes Festival, which introduces diners to new experiences and flavors using abundant fish species, showcasing to people options other than over-fished varieties. It's no surprise the establishment is Ocean Wise, with swimming scallops from the Gulf Islands, Kusshi oysters and Reed oysters from B.C. and sustainably-farmed sturgeon from Sechelt. A typical entree is about $34.

La Pentola
322 Davie Street

Recently opened in September 2012, La Pentola serves up gourmet Italian dishes while also incorporating the Italian philosophy to source locally. In Italy, the regions are diverse because specific ingredients are important to different areas. Additionally, there are a vast amount of quality, artisanal products and farms around Vancouver, which La Pentola makes use of by working with them to create their dishes. For example, the restaurant uses squab from local livestock farms. Their dish has a sauce made from grapes, and a walla walla onion puree where both ingredients come from local Stoney Paradise Farm. To La Pentola, being cutting edge also means holding yourself accountable to the environment and the community. Expect to pay about $6 to $17 for a starter, $12/$13 for a pasta and $30 for an entree.

Werewolves are not monsters from fairytales. Most lead normal lives. They can go to school, get a job, raise a family just like any other human. But there's a catch. If they don't shift frequently, they become ravenous when the full moon is out. The wolf in them comes out, more hungry and cruel then ever. ?
They wolf gene is passed down from parents- even if just one parent is a werewolf, their child will have the same fate as them. Wolves abandoning their pack and having a child with a human is very, very rare. They are usually born into a pack. Werewolves can tell if another person is a werewolf or human, even before their first change. They usually change for the first time when they are about thirteen. Packs often have scouts that find packless werewolves that don't know who they are, and befriend them so when their first change comes, they take them to the pack and they are adopted in.?

But werewolves can also be bitten. If a human is bitten by a werewolf, they will change immediately. The first change is very long and very painful, for Changlings and natural-born werewolves. It can take anywhere from four to ten hours. If another werewolf doesn't help them through their first change, they will likely die. When a werewolf bites a human and helps them through their first change, they are bound together. They can sense each others feelings, and speak to each other telepathically. Once a werewolf bites a human, they are completely responsible for the confused and overwhelmed Changling. They have a hard time controlling changing back and forth between human and wolf, and the world is now so bright it hurts their eyes, and every noise hurts their ears. Werewolves often take their Changling away from the rest of the pack until they have fully adjusted, which can take anywhere from weeks to months.?

If a human is to bear a werewolf child, it is almost guaranteed that she will not survive the pregnancy, and she definitely will not survive the birth of her child. Human skin and systems are simply too weak. This is mainly what discourages solves from having children with humans.?
There is one way for a wolf to possibly save their mate, though. If a human is bitten while they are pregnant, their chances of survival are higher. They do not shift until after their pup is born, but they still have the strength of a werewolf.?
There's a catch. It has to be the father of her child who bites her. Is another wolf bites her, there will be no difference. But if the father of her child bites her, her eyes will flash a very wolfish yellow, just for a moment and she will quickly go from weak and fragile looking to strong and healthy.

Meet the Pack

The Brighton Pack lives deep in a forest, with a large pack house. The alpha is in bad shape, after an attack from a rival pack. His own brother's pack. See, in this pack if there are two or three brothers, they fight to see who is the strongest. The winner becomes the alpha. The current alpha and his brother were never close- constantly fighting. Not brotherly scuffles, they were going for blood even we they were young.?
The current alpha won, and his brother stormed off. He bit humans, creating his own pack. He set out to have revenge on his brother.

After a particularly brutal attack, the alpha is very badly injured. He is not expected to recover. The alpha was the only one injured, but the entire pack is now very edgy and worried about what The rival pack might do next. Especially given the fact that some of the young pack members have gotten themselves involved with humans.

Characters

The wolves

Image
They are twins. One of them will most likely be the next alpha. They are nothing like their father and his brother. They are very close, constantly teasing each other and play fighting with each other. If either one wins, the other will happily back down and support him. They are both 19.?

Oliver Brighton?
Image
Stubborn. He is the sensible one. Well, most of the time. When he wants something, he will throw himself entirely into it. He has amazing dedication, but doesn't back down easily. He is very intelligent, and usually is very gentle but can be very forceful. ?
FC: Finn Harries (reserved)

James Brighton?
Image
Careless. He seems not to have a care in the world. He isn't very serious, and loves to have fun and prank his siblings.??He has a a bright, cheerful soul that is very hard to hamper. When it comes to his pack and things he really cares about, he can be very serious though.?
FC: Jack Harries?OPEN

Image
Image
These two are Oliver and James's younger siblings. They are rather close, and somewhat protective of each other. They fight often, but overall love each other.

Annabel Brighton?
Image
Vain. Anna has a terrible habit of being all about appearances. She hates being ignored, and can be somewhat demanding. Deep down, she is just afraid of being forgotten. She is fiercely protective of her family, and hates 'intruders'.
FC: Clair Holt (reserved)

Nathaniel Brighton?
Image
Player. He hates staying in one place, or with one girl. He can come off a little cold, and is an expert at keeping his emotions hidden. He is really just afraid of falling in love. Surprisingly, he is actually quite affectionate. He's 17.
FC: Caspar Lee OPEN

The humans

Eleanor Whiteraven?
Image
Hardheaded. Ella can't stand being pushed around, or forced into things. She has learned to be very independent, and get along just fine on her own. She is very free spirited, and it's difficult to get umber her skin. But once you do, she is the most caring and loyal girl you could know. -TAKEN-

Logan Nox?
Image
Pushover. Logan is a big softie. He has a hard time telling people no. He is very shy and kindhearted, yet protective of the ones he loves.
FC: Josh Devine OPEN

Caroline Thorn
Image
Bitter. Caroline often is quite coldhearted and uncaring. She doesn't trust people easily at all, and has a terrible habit of using people then leaving them like they are nothing. Deep down, she's really so terrified of being hurt.
FC: Candice Accola (reserved)

Relationships
Now this is where it gets. . . . complicated.?

Oliver, James, and Eleanor
Awkward. At at party they got quite drunk. Both of the boys took a liking to Ella. What happened. . . They were too drunk too remember. Eleanor moved on, thinking nothing of it until she found out she was pregnant. The worst. . . She didn't know which one the father was. The pack took her in, and the Alpha female (the twins' mother) cared for her. She is due within a week and hasn't allowed either of the twins to bite her.

Annabel and Logan
Annabel had always had a soft spot for the human. ?When thought she saw him looking at another girl, jealousy overtook her. In the heat of the moment, she bit him and brought him back to the pack house. Slowly, Logan begins to grow to care for her. (when the rp starts he's just been bitten)

Nathaniel and Caroline
At the same party that his brothers found Eleanor, Nathaniel found Caroline. He got caught up in her beauty but instead of getting her pregnant, he bit her. He quickly realized what a mistake he had made- this complete stranger was completely his responsibility. And she was not going down quietly.?The Alpha Female helps her, aswell, but overall it is his responsibility.

But, of corse, the rival pack is not going to just let them have a happy ending. The more pain they can cause, the better.

Lack of sleep tied to teen sports injuries

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? Adolescent athletes who slept eight or more hours each night were 68 percent less likely to be injured than athletes who regularly slept less, according to an abstract presented Oct. 21, at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

For the abstract, "Lack of Sleep is Associated with Increased Risk of Injury in Adolescent Athletes," researchers asked middle and high school athletes (grades 7 to 12) enrolled at the Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, Calif., to answer questions about the number of sports they played and the time they committed to athletics (at school and through other programs), whether they used a private coach, whether they participated in strength training, how much sleep they got on average each night, and how much they subjectively enjoyed their athletic participation. Seventy percent of the student athletes (112 out of 160 students; 54 males and 58 females; mean age 15) completed the survey, conducted in conjunction with Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Researchers then reviewed those students' school records pertaining to reported athletic injuries.

Hours of sleep per night was significantly associated with a decreased likelihood of injury, according to the study results. In addition, the higher the grade level of the athlete, the greater the likelihood of injury -- 2.3 times greater for each additional grade in school. Gender, weeks of participating in sports per year, hours of participation per week, number of sports, strength training, private coaching and subjective assessments of "having fun in sports" were not significantly associated with injury.

"While other studies have shown that lack of sleep can affect cognitive skills and fine motor skills, nobody has really looked at this subject in terms of the adolescent athletic population," said study author Matthew Milewski, MD.

"When we started this study, we thought the amount of sports played, year-round play, and increased specialization in sports would be much more important for injury risk," said Dr. Milewski. Instead, "what we found is that the two most important facts were hours of sleep and grade in school."

The advanced age risk may reflect a cumulative risk for injury after playing three or four years at the high school level, Milewski said, and older athletes are bigger, faster and stronger.

The Growth of Misogyny and the Erosion of Women's Rights ? Social ...

Social Justice Solutions ? woman?s rights

Lately,?I?ve?been processing troubling thoughts on the growth of misogyny in this country and many parts of the world. What does it mean for children growing up in such a society and what is the impact on the future of human relations and the rights of women? How is this happening, why now, and why are we not addressing it openly and definitively?

Girls are growing up in world that prizes physical attractiveness above all else and belittles female achievement in everything from sports to business, to political and religious engagement. Females are largely and routinely defined by their looks and body parts, and as a society we have gone to great lengths and expense to meet some largely unrealistic ideal of beauty as evidenced by the explosion of cosmetic and augmentation surgery at younger and younger ages. Granted, this?isn?t?only a gender issue, but it affects women and girls at exponentially greater rates than men or boys. We are a society that is said to prize youth and beauty, but do we value it? Do we offer it a unique voice or equal protection under the law? Or does such gendered commodification reduce the voice of all women?

Comprising 51% of American society, women hold only 16% or so of the leadership positions in business and government. How is this possible when women have been a necessary part of the work force for well over half a century and a necessary part of the world since the beginning of time? In 2010 only 2.4% of the U.S. Fortune 500 chief executives were female. In the FTSE 500 the statistics are even worse?only 1.8% of its companies are led by women. In world rankings of women in government, The United States scores a deplorable 79 out of a listing of 139 countries, having 16.9% representation in the house of representative, and 17.0% in the senate. For a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, it is apparent not all of the people are equally represented or protected under the law.

Have women?s rights advanced? Yes, to a degree. We can now vote and own property in most of the world. But has it been three steps forward and two steps back? Women?s rights are being eroded openly and publicly yet that fact is disguised and deflected by arguments which compare apples to oranges. How many of us are aware that rapists have the same rights and privileges under the law as other fathers in most states in our nation? Even when the rape victim is a 14 year old girl! How many of us know that children are not legally able to consent to sex, but across this nation get placed in foster care and are incarcerated as juvenile delinquents, often as young as 11, when arrested for prostitution? Though in several states their legal status has come to be redefined to the that of victim of human trafficking, thanks to rights worker?s efforts, funding has not provided the necessary services and supports to ensure the proper care of these young victims making this a hollow victory for children?s rights and in the fight against human trafficking by providing no real aid, only lip service and paper protection. 90-95% of sex trade and human trafficking victims are female, half of whom are under the legal age of 18. Does the general public know or acknowledge that violent, openly misogynistic pornography is readily available and easily accessible to the average 11 year old with computer access? Or that cartoons, and reality?programming?use misogynistic depictions and language supportive of an already growing ?rape culture? in this country?

As noted in a previous post, rape is reported to be on the rise throughout the world, the easily understood concept of rape has been perverted through semantics making some ideas of rape more ?legitimate? than others, and in several states, in an alarming and seemingly little contested trend, women are forced to endure vaginal ultrasounds before abortions regardless of the conditions of pregnancy.

Silence is equivalent to acceptance and assent. We have all heard the phrase for evil to triumph, all is required is for good men to do nothing. What are our good men, and our good women doing?

I am not a particularly religious person, though I do observe the major holidays of my heritage. I think most traditional expectations of formal religions tend to be indoctrination into norms and values handed down through generations of men imposing what is in their best interests over the rights of women and these norms and expectations are perpetuated through what these institutions teach children. Women are not given equal standing in any formal religious tradition that I am aware of though they are equally capable and equipped. Women have continued to be placed in subservient positions by the men that lead these organizations and the myth that such a hierarchy is the natural order of things based on a higher power or purpose simply serves to justify men?s rights to make rules that govern women and keep them at a disadvantaged position in every manner from world affairs to family hierarchies more often than not. Our nation?s religious roots run deeply, and have much greater power than our founding fathers ever intended.

From a strict anthropological or sociological perspective I am not sure if a straight definition of sexual equality is entirely possible, but gender equality certainly should be in an advanced civil society. Women are equally educated, and have equal expectations regarding being productive wage earners, yet laws are enacted that hobble women and limit their ability to benefit as fully from, or participate as fully in our society as men.
I worry about what it means for boys as well; boys exposed early and repeatedly to a ?double standard? and a ?rape culture? and socialized in societies that favor the rights of males above the rights of females. In my home, and my circle, I teach equality and tell those I love that they can achieve anything if they work at it and believe in themselves. But is that true? Can they really believe in the absoluteness of their human rights and potential when society?s message tells them their accomplishments mean less than their physical attributes, or their gender dictates what they can and should aspire to?

At this point in time equality is an illusion. Our?hierarchical?society is far from promoting genuine equality in many ways. Equal pay for equal work is an illusion. Non-discriminatory hiring practices are an illusion. Discrimination is real. Sexism is real. The glass ceiling is real. The growth of openly accepted misogynistic messages in our culture in everything from music, to television?programming? to talk show hosts public statements, and elected officials gender-biased views on the legitimacy of rape, contraception, pregnancy and abortion is too real and colors the world of those growing up in it.
Is this the legacy we want to leave this and future generations? Those of us with daughters, how should we respond and prepare our girls for the possibility that they may, statistically, be sexually abused or raped at some point in their lives as 1 in 5?women are? And those of with sons, how do we impart the message to value women as equals when the culture they live in teaches them a very different message through a variety of avenues? I hope what I say makes a difference in the lives of those I love, but my bigger hope is that starting a hard and uncomfortable dialog can begin to change a mindset that does not equally support, value, or respect half of the world?s population.

007 Skyfall screening Oct. 29 to benefit Arcadia charities ...

You are here: Home / Featured / 007 screening to benefit Arcadia

James Bond is celebrating his 50th Anniversary in Arcadia with a special advance fundraiser screening of the newest 007 film ?Skyfall? ?on Oct. 29, well before most of the rest of the world sees it, and nearly two weeks before it officially opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 9.

With James Bond having a connection to Arcadia, Santa Anita Park, and Breeders? Cup (see below), proceeds will benefit racing charities and be used as seed money for a potential 2013 return of the Arcadia?s Best Patriotic Festival and parade.

The first Bond movie presented in the giant-screen IMAX format will be shown at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at the AMC Santa Anita 16 IMAX theater in the Westfield Santa Anita mall, which seats nearly 300 people. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.
MGM, under studio chairman and Santa Anita horse race fan Gary Barber, and Santa Anita Park CEO Mark Verge are partnering on the pre-Breeders? Cup World Championships fundraiser event from which all proceeds will be donated to three charities: CARMA (California Retirement Management Account for retired race horses), the PDJF (Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund), and Arcadia?s Best Foundation.
The latter is the non-profit community events arm of this web site that produced One Community, One Book events the past two years and last year?s Arcadia?s Best Patriotic Festival that attracted 4,000 people to watch more than 70 local parade entries on First Avenue in Downtown Arcadia.

In response to popular demand, organizers hope to raise enough money to produce the Festival and parade again next summer. Donations from this ?Skyfall? screening ? split with the other two horse racing charities ? will be put towards raising the $35,000 needed for the Festival and parade. Otherwise, the money will be put into producing the next One Community, One Book program.

Tickets are priced at $100 each and are available on Santa Anita?s website, www.SantaAnita.com.

?Skyfall,? the 23rd film in the longest-running and most successful film series of time, stars Daniel Craig in his third outing as the British secret agent even though this is the first new Bond movie in four years. Adele?s theme song for the movie was just released this month (music video at bottom).

Arcadia, Santa Anita, and the Breeders? Cup have a special connection to 007:

The man who brought the 1950s James Bond novels by Ian Fleming to the big screen with ?Dr. No? in October 1962 was Albert R. ?Cubby? Broccoli (yes, of the Italian family responsible for creating the vegetable of the same name by crossing a cauliflower with rabe).
About the time he was becoming a movie producer, Broccoli also acquired a taste for thoroughbred race horses after being introduced to the sport by friend Alfred G. Vanderbilt.

After more than a quarter-century of 007 movies and in the midst of the longest unplanned six-year gap in the series in the early 1990s, Broccoli became owner of a horse that he called Brocco.

At the same time, Cubby was grooming his daughter Barbara Broccoli and stepson Michael G. Wilson to take over his role as primary producer and overseer of the franchise. His last official act with the 007 films was to cast Pierce Brosnan as the new James Bond. At the time, Brosnan was the star of the popular TV series ?Remington Steele,? which filmed parts of at least one episode in Arcadia, across the street from the Santa Anita race track at the Los Angeles County Arboretum.

Meanwhile, Broccoli was riding Brocco to global fame in a different arena.

Under Hall of Fame Santa Anita jockey Gary Stevens, Brocco won the $1 million Breeders? Cup Juvenile race in one of the rare years it was held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia on Nov. 6, 1993. The second favorite at 3-1 won by five lengths, making him the ?new darling of the ?94 Derby,? according to Sports Illustrated.

Five months later, Brocco won the $500,000 Santa Anita Derby Handicap on April 10, 1994, for the 85-year-old Broccoli. Again under Stevens, the three-year-old Brocco came from nearly 10 lengths off the pace and gradually caught and passed Tabasco Cat for a three-quarter-length victory, stamping Brocco as the ?Best of the West? heading into the Triple Crown classics.

Broccoli, wearing running shoes, a bright red sweater under a tweed coat, and using a cane, was accompanied by his wife, Dana. He likened the Santa Anita Derby victory in Arcadia to the opening night crowd for his first Bond movie in 1962 at the London Palladium, ?Dr. No.? He said Brocco ? which won four of his eight races and placed second twice ? was the best horse he ever owned.

A year later ?Goldeneye? completed Cubby?s final stamp on the 007 series by resurrecting the James Bond franchise in 1995.
Broccoli died the following year in 1996.

It?s fitting on the 50th anniversary of Broccoli?s film franchise to present one of the first screenings of ?Skyfall? during Breeders? Cup week just a few hundred yards from the site of the most memorable victories of Broccoli and his horse Brocco at Santa Anita Park race track.

Public Speaking Tips For Kids | Planning With Kids

Public Speaking Tips For Kids

Hello and welcome to Planning With Kids! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my Free Email Updates. Thanks for visiting!

It is speech competition time at our kids? primary school. Each child in every year level must write and present a speech to their class. The top couple are then chosen to present the same speech in front of the whole school and winners are chosen for each year level.

The speeches are written and practiced at home. This year I created a template for the kids to help make a start on their speech. The template not only helps them plan out the content for their speech, but gives them tips on how to define the purpose, research and practise their speech.

Public Speaking Guide For Kids Table 1
You can download the template we used by either clicking on the image above or here ? Public Speaking Guide For Kids.

I used this template with all three kids ? prep, year three and year five. The level of guidance needed by each child varied and I naturally I spent the most time with the six year old as this is the first time he has had to write and present a speech.

Not every element of the template will necessarily need to be completed and depends on the topic. For example the prep child chose ?Kids have fun when?.? from the list of topics for his class. This topic requires no research to be done as he is an expert in knowing how kids have fun!

The kids may also need more room than for the ?middle? section, depending on how long their speech is to be. We simply turned over the page and wrote on the back.

Public Speaking Tips For Kids ? A Checklist

I have listed below the elements the template covers:

  • Topic and Time: Choose something that you are interested in.
  • How long do you have to talk for?
  • Audience: Who will you be talking to and who will be judging.
  • Subject and purpose: What is the aim of your speech ? to persuade, inform, entertain, etc. Brainstorm ideas note them down. Note personal stories you can add to make it more interesting.
  • Research: Not just internet, newspapers, magazines, library, family friends etc.
  • Structure: Ask yourself the question ? ?At the end of the speech I would like my audience to??.
  • Beginning: Brief, capture the attention of the audience and establish the subject and purpose of the speech. Don?t just restate the topic. Add your personality and make it unique, many others may be talking on the same topic.
  • Middle: Sets out your ideas, shares your research, includes examples to support your topic. For your time limit work out how many points / paragraphs you can include. Work on having a powerful statement to lead into each new point / paragraph.
  • End: Short statement relating back to the topic and sums up the subject and purpose of the speech. Make it brief, but memorable. Try including a memorable line that the audience can take away with them. Memorise your conclusion, so your last couple of sentences can be delivered with confidence and with full eye contact with the audience.
  • Practice: By yourself first. Time it and edit your content so it first with the time restraints.
  • Palm Cards: Then make palm cards for key points only. Keep cards to a minimum and number them.
  • Dress rehearsal: Practice using palm cards, first by yourself, then either in front of family or even video your self.

Do your kids do public speaking at school?

Keywords Matter! - Business 2 Community

Bad things are happening to good people all over the internet. Thousands, if not millions of online marketers, businesspeople and retailers are struggling for traffic, performing abysmally in search results, and have no idea where they went wrong. They might have the best web design, or some of the fanciest new site features, but they dropped the ball on one of the first and most important steps. These people are all casualties of bad keyword practices.

Keywords are the fundamental building blocks of any good online marketing campaign. If you have any hopes of making it big on the internet, you?ve got to do your research, and you need to do it right. We?re here to show you how to do it right, from start to finish.

What Are Keywords, and Are They Necessary?

Keywords are more than just the words you describe your website with. Keywords are the words and phrases you anticipate other visitors and customers will use in search engines to find you. Keywords can?t only make sense to you, they have to make sense to everyone else. 90% of internet users will look for information through search engines, and you need to make sure that they can find you by optimizing for the right keywords.

Doing the research and finding the right keywords people will use to find your services is what separates the casual web users from the serious online business people. You have to know where, when, and how to move away from your own short-list of ?personal favorite? keywords, and start digging into facts, figures, data points and research on real keywords that perform well. It?s tough, but it?s manageable, and you can do it with the right help.

First Steps: Understanding What Makes A Keyword ?Valuable?

Which of these keywords is more valuable? ?Cheap golf lessons,? or ?golf lessons??

At first glance, it?s hard to tell. There?s only one word difference between the two, ?cheap.? If you had to value one phrase over the other, surely ?cheap golf lessons? would be the better keyword. It conveys intent and purpose. Plus, who doesn?t like a discount?

When you look at the actual data in software like Google?s Keyword Research Tool, you might be surprised. ?Golf lessons? is such a widely used keyword, you could spend far too much money on PPC ads with it. Trying to rank for this keyword is too difficult because it sees millions of searches each month?and millions of other sites are competing for those search results. It isn?t worthless, but the alternative is more appealing.

?Cheap golf lessons? is more specific, and sees a fraction of the monthly searches that its more general alternative does. Although it could be a more cost-effective PPC keyword, you might see more conversions from this keyword by using it in your content marketing optimizations. Both of these keywords could be great for on-site blog writing and content generation. If you had to choose one or the other to spend money on in a PPC campaign, the more specific the keyword, the better.

There is a difference between a keyword and a valuable keyword: a valuable keyword sends people that are more willing to convert on your products to your website, pre-qualifies visitors with added context in phrases, and helps you convert more and faster on higher-quality search results. High-value keywords might be longer than the generic keyword you initially thought you would use, but they will produce more conversions and will result in much lower PPC advertising costs overall. A plain old keyword chosen without research or strategy might eventually do all of that. If you?re lucky.

Keyword Research Is Absolutely Vital

When you get down to it, keywords are easily the most important part of your online marketing strategies. They determine how people will find you, how visible you are online, and how relevant you are in related searches. Finding valuable keywords is part scientific exploration and part creative planning, and finding valuable keywords is crucial to SEO success. Knowing how to use keywords is another valuable skill, and overdoing it can get you in trouble.

Over the next few posts, I?ll be exploring these steps further and teaching you how to get started on in-depth keyword research like the pros. After that, we?ll look at best practices for content generation: how you can use those keywords to create effective, organic, search engine optimized content that pulls customers directly to you.

Meeting reviews safety measures in Ha Long Bay

Oct 19

Ha Long Bay rescue agencies met with the People?s Committee of Quang Ninh Province on October 15 to review safety and injury prevention measures, following a spate of waterway accidents.

The two agencies currently in charge of bay rescues ? the Ha Long Bay Management Board Rescue Centre and the local Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism?s Centre of Diving and Rescue for Underwater Sports ? have both been labelled ineffective due to lack of staff and equipment.
The Quang Ninh Province?s Port Department said the provincial People?s Committee needs to provide more resources for the agencies in charge and must step up cooperation between local authorities and concerned provinces to ensure safety on the bay.

The Waterway Traffic Police of Quang Ninh Province suggested increased inspections of waterway vehicles in ports and increased management over fishing villages, beaches and areas where boats stay, to ensure they are meeting required safety standards.

Other agencies also asked the People?s Committee to approve the plan to step up rescue work and fire prevention for Ha Long Bay to 2015, with a vision until 2020.

Vu Thi Thu Thuy, Deputy Chairwoman of the provincial People?s Committee said the committee had asked relevant local agencies to develop on-site rescue plans as an urgent solution.

She added that the committee was developing long-term plans to organise training courses to raise the awareness and capacity of those in the tourism sector, especially boat operators.

Family: Ex-Sen. McGovern 'no longer responsive'

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? The family of ex-U.S. Sen. George McGovern says the 90-year-old is "no longer responsive" in hospice care.

McGovern's family issued a statement Wednesday afternoon through Avera McKennan Hospital.

His daughter, Ann McGovern, earlier told The Associated Press that her father is "nearing the end" and appears restful and peaceful. She says it's a blessing that she and other family members are able to be with him.

McGovern was the Democratic presidential candidate who lost to President Richard Nixon in 1972 in a historic landslide. He was a member of the U.S. House from 1957 to 1961 and a U.S. senator from 1963 to 1981, and considered a leader in his party's liberal wing during that time.

In recent years, he turned his focus to world hunger.

TSA set to fire 25 at Newark airport over security lapses

The Transportation Security Administration announced today that it has proposed to fire 25 of its employees and to suspend another 19 at Newark International Airport for alleged misconduct.

The TSA did not immediately say exactly why the action is being considered against the nearly four dozen employees, but the announcement comes days after security screeners at the airport were criticized in an internal TSA document that alleged startling, large-scale security failures. The document was reported by New Jersey's Star Ledger.

The TSA said in a statement that it "has a zero tolerance for misconduct in the workplace" and the agency "takes prompt and appropriate action with any employee who does not follow our procedures and engages in misconduct."

ABC News Investigates TSA Thefts

Last month an country-wide ABC News investigation revealed that 382 TSA officers have been fired since the TSA was formed a decade ago for allegedly stealing from passengers. As part of the investigation, ABC News tracked an iPad that was purposefully left behind at an airport security checkpoint in Orlando to the home of a TSA agent.

Another former TSA employee, Pythias Brown, served three years in prison for theft and said he stole approximately $800,000 worth of cash and merchandise from travelers before he was caught.

"It was very commonplace, very," Brown told ABC News. Brown was a former employee at Newark International. "It was very convenient to steal? [TSA agents] didn't think it was okay, but they did it and said, 'I don't care. They ain't paying me. They're treating me wrong.' But when people started seeing they could profit off of it, then it became massive."

In response to ABC News' original report that echoed its statement today, the TSA provided a statement that said it has a "zero tolerance" policy towards theft and that the number of officers fired "represents less than one-half of one percent of officers that have been employed" by the TSA.

Susquehanna Township expects no tax increase for 2013 ...

Susquehanna Township officials expect to present a no-tax-increase preliminary budget for 2013 in November ? a contrast to last year?s 24 percent hike to repair aging storm drains.

Budget and Finance Committee Chair Jody Rebarchak said at the township commissioners? Oct. 11 meeting that the citizens? budget committee ? consisting of residents who review and comment on the budget ? had considered a spending plan ?with no tax or fee increases.?

?Such a budget is possible, in part, due to the prudent financial management of township staff,? Rebarchak said. ?They hold the line on spending in their respective departments each year without sacrificing the quality of services received by residents or the safety of township employees.?

A zero-tax-hike budget would keep property taxes at 2.598 mills, for a $259.80 bill on a home assessed at $100,000. Last year?s $11 million spending plan increased property taxes by 24 percent to finance repairs to an aging infrastructure that had been stressed by 2011?s severe storms.

The preliminary budget will be released at the Nov. 8 commissioners? meeting.

The Fear & Competition of Public Speaking ? The Aspiring ...

Public speaking infront of a group of critical strangers is universally mans greatest fear. Personally, I used to share echo this sentiment. I?ll admit it?s something I?ve avoided when possible. I?m not completely frightened per say ? in the past I just didn?t feel comfortable speaking in front of a group of people whom I don?t know.

Part of me feels as though I don?t have much to contribute of value, (translation: who cares what some dumbass like me has to say?) so why potentially embarrass myself in front of a group of strangers? The risk-reward didn?t seem to check out? Much like how terrified I was starting this blog.

The issue is vulnerability ? we struggle to step outside the comfort and safety of our daily routines to which w can control.

A Transformation

I?ve come to realise I?m in a somewhat unique situation (narcissistic rant coming). I?ve accomplished my goal of startimg a career the social media landscape ? making the transformation from full-time amateur athlete / student to working at a upstart tech company.

I was given the opportunity to speak to a group of university students a couple of months ago. The speaking gig was hardly something to boast about, it was a panel with three others. The subject of said panel? How to pursue a?career in e business. The audience comprised of Undergraduate Business School students looking to carve out a career in the digital space.

Given that I was in a similar position to these students a year ago ? I thought it a great chance to share advice and maybe weave a few tales of my journey.

Sharing and Competition ~ #Winning?

Any pre-game butterflies immediately vanished when I introduced myself to the eager students ? before i knew it, I even got a laugh or two out of the audience (shocker right?).

Sharing any knowledge I may have is pretty rewarding. Coming from a psychology background, I love to help people ? ?the fact that these students cared what I had to say is a pretty amazing feeling.

Coming from an athletic background, I actually compare public speaking to competing in sport. My mindset shifted to competition mode when the panel started? For some crazy reason I wanted to ?outperform? my fellow panelists (who were all amazing by the way).

Simply put? I wanted to win.

Express Yourself ~ The Rush

Starting this blog was terrifying. Much like anything else, there?s a learning curve. Getting comfortable with sharing my thoughts in writing took time, public speaking is similar.

Surprise surprise? like anything else, it takes practice.

The rush I got from public speaking was pretty amazing.?I was shocked at the response from the students of my Alma Mater. I?m hooked ?and I can?t wait to speak more frequently.

Are you scared of public speaking? Does it get easier with practice?
