Android Resolutions: Resolve to help thy fellow Android neighbor

Sharing is caring.  We've all heard that phrase before, and I'll wager that most of the time we all agree.  I think at heart everyone wants to be a helpful member of society, both online and off.  If I'm right, there's an easy way we can make an impact -- helping our fellow Android enthusiasts. 

Resolve to help thy fellow Android neighbor

Think back to when you first got your hands on an Android phone or tablet.  Remember the excitement and fun you had discovering all the great stuff you could do with it?  Now remember how frustrating it was when you couldn't find the easy way to do something simple, like add a contact or change the notification for SMS messages.  We all have been there, and chances are we had to ask a question or two along the way.  Hopefully, the answers we all got were helpful and friendly.

Now think how many people got an Android device this holiday season -- 3.7 million of them (not counting Amazon Kindle Fires).  You will meet some of these people online, and especially here at Android Central.  They are going to have questions if this is their first Android device.  Take a moment, and offer advice in a helpful way.  In fact, resolve to go one step further and head into the forums once a day and try to find someone to help.  You'll feel good doing it, and chances are you can help make someone a bit happier with their new Android phone or tablet. 

We're not suggesting you hold someone's hand and walk them through every simple little thing -- nobody learns anything that way.  We're just saying that we all need to take a few moments and offer an helpful advice we have to our neighbors in need.  Try it, chances are you'll like it.

Ask Engadget: best live traffic standalone GPS?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Elliot 'Mr. E' M. Smith who is trying to avoid Los Angeles rush-hour traffic with the help of his GPS. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I prefer using a GPS unit, not my phone, when I'm driving around LA. The best traffic I've seen is via Google Maps, since it shows surface traffic for streets in Hollywood. Navteq HD Radio maps (which is what I use now) doesn't show this kind of information: it's only for highways. There aren't any highways between Hollywood and Beverly Hills, but there's a ton of traffic, which you're blind to when using a standalone GPS. Is there an easy way to get surface traffic data on a GPS unit rather than forking out for a phone / tablet and $30/month data plan? Thanks!"

Team Canada pumped up over New Year?s Eve clash with the Americans

EDMONTON - There is still one Edmonton game left on Team Canada?s schedule, but the initial mission has been accomplished.

Canada has already secured a ticket to the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship semifinal which will be staged in Calgary?s Scotiabank Saddledome on Jan. 3.

Undefeated in the three games they played in the Pool B preliminary round, Canada had its destiny set when the Czech Republic scored a 5-2 win over the U.S. on Friday afternoon.

In Calgary?s Pool A, Russia and Sweden go head-to-head to determine which team heads to the remaining semifinal game. The Russians have nine points from three wins while Sweden has eight after securing two wins in regulation time and one win in overtime.

Canada (3-0) plays the U.S. in the final preliminary game at Rexall Place on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Americans go into the game with one win, two losses and a lot of frustration.

?It doesn?t matter what the stakes are when you?re playing the U.S.,? Team Canada defenceman Mark Pysyk said.

?This is a game we?ve obviously had circled since Day 1,? said Brandon Wheat Kings forward Mark Stone. ?There?s not too much love between the two countries.?

Before Canada had even made its way to Edmonton for the start of the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship, Pysyk figured he had a firm grasp on what the experience would be like. He grew up in Sherwood Park, plays for the Edmonton Oil Kings, so he was certain he knew what was to come.

But he was not ready for the outpouring of support. And he can?t imagine what the scene will be like when the Edmonton portion of the tournament ends New Year?s Eve with a game against the Americans. The red, white and blue have been the team fans have loved to hate since the tournament opened on Dec. 26.

?You can imagine all you want that you?re playing for Team Canada in a full building, but nothing in your head compares to what it?s actually like,? Pysyk said.

The top three teams from each pool will advance to the medal round in Calgary. The bottom two teams in both the Edmonton and Calgary pools will head to the relegation round, which will also be staged in the Saddledome.

?It?s been everything and more,? Nathan Beaulieu, a defenceman with the Saint John Sea Dogs said when asked if the tournament has been everything he expected. ?I?ve never played in front of a crowd this crazy (and) they will definitely be behind us tomorrow.

?We?re really looking forward to the game tomorrow and I?m sure they are, too.?
