Australian, Korean and US scientists have generated a 65-year record of Southern Hemisphere nitrous oxide measurements establishing a new benchmark against which to compare changes in the long-lived greenhouse gas that is also a major ozone-depleting substance.Published this week in the journal Nature Geoscience, the record is drawn from atmospheric sampling at the Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station, Tasmania, and air extracted from the Antarctic ice sheet

Its significance, says co-author CSIRO's Dr David Etheridge, will be its contribution to the development of emissions protocols as countries step up their monitoring of gases contributing to global warming and ozone depletion.

Nitrous oxide, N2O, is produced naturally by microbial activity in soils and the oceans as well as by agriculture. With a lifetime in the atmosphere of around 120 years, it is eventually broken down by oxidation in the stratosphere.

Scientists have measured a 20% increase in atmospheric nitrous oxide since 1750.

Dr Etheridge said that through analysis of isotopes, which are different forms of the nitrogen and oxygen comprising nitrous oxide, researchers identified that the increase of nitrous oxide was largely from agricultural sources.

"Through these measurements and a close analysis of the record we can also see seasonal cycles in N2O's isotopic composition, as well as large year-to-year variations and long-term trends," he said

He said the unique record of seasonal cycles allows scientists to trace the production and loss of nitrous oxide, from its origins in the ocean and soils to its movement through the stratosphere where it contributes to breaking down ozone.

"Until now the balance between the stratospheric sink and the oceanic source of nitrous oxide has been a key uncertainty in understanding nitrous oxide variations at the Earth's surface.

"This new evidence of the budget nitrous oxide allows us to better predict its future changes and therefore its impacts on climate and stratospheric ozone depletion - for different scenarios of fertiliser use in support of rising populations and increased production for bio-energy," he said.

Dr Etheridge said the record demonstrates the value of Australia's investment, through CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology, in a world-class atmospheric monitoring station since the 1970s, with its underlying vision of establishing an air archive which can be measured as new technologies are developed.

Adding to this is the Australian Antarctic Division's glaciology program that accesses a natural archive of the past atmosphere, at its primary drilling site Law Dome.

Dr Etheridge said that better estimates of the magnitudes and geographic distribution of N2O sources and how they change over time help formulate sound emissions policies.

Led by University of California-Berkeley's Dr Sunyoung Park, Australian co-authors included CSIRO scientists at the Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research, Drs Paul Fraser, Paul Krummel, Ray Langenfelds, Paul Steele, Cathy Trudinger, and Dr Tas van Ommen, from the Australian Antarctic Division.

The Cape Grim Air Pollution Station's scientific research is jointly managed by the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research. The Australian Antarctic Division and the Australian Antarctic Science Program supported access and drilling at Law Dome.

10,000 Year Old Frozen Mammoth Found Perfectly Preserved in Siberia [Science]

The BBC is reporting on the discovery of a mammoth carcass found preserved in Siberian ice for at least 10,000 years. The carcass is that of a juvenile mammoth, about 2 1/2 years old, that researchers have dubbed "Yuka." Its flesh, and even hair, have endured astonishingly well over millennia buried in ice. Video of the mammoth being uncovered can be seen on the BBC website. More »

Dengue Virus Makes Mosquitoes Better Spreaders

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Evolution

The dengue virus makes its mosquito hosts more bloodthirsty and quicker to find a blood meal, thus spreading the virus faster. Christopher Intagliata reports.

More 60-Second Science

The dengue virus depends on mosquitoes to get around. But the virus may have evolved a way to speed its spread?by manipulating the behavior of its mosquito hosts. It makes them more bloodthirsty, and quicker to find a blood meal, than their uninfected counterparts. So says a study in the journal Public Library of Science Pathogens. [Shuzhen Sim, Jose L. Ramirez and George Dimopoulos, Dengue Virus Infection of the Aedes aegypti Salivary Gland and Chemosensory Apparatus Induces Genes that Modulate Infection and Blood-Feeding Behavior]

Researchers compared which genes were active in the salivary glands of infected and uninfected mosquitoes. And they found that dengue infection flipped the switch on 147 genes. As expected, some of those were immune genes?a common response to infection. But the virus also turned on genes involved in odor detection and blood-feeding. Which could make a mosquito better at sniffing out hosts, and quicker to plunge its proboscis into the skin for a snack.

Previous studies have shown malaria parasites can change a mosquito's behavior too, by making it more likely to feed on multiple victims?thus infecting more people.

And the researchers say we humans may also do the bidding of these pathogens. When infected we sweat?and the odor attracts other mosquitoes that feed on us and pick up hitchhiking pathogens for their next ride.

Video: Stationary front pushes tornadoes to Dallas

>>> dr. greg forbes is the severe weather specialist at the weather channel . he's been on the air all day covering these storms from their atlanta headquarters. we've been watching your coverage all afternoon and evening. when people see this, they ask the same question, what's going on with our weather? how common is not only an early april tornado in tem as, but an outbreak of them in the major metropolitan area .

>> certainly in the metro area , that's really the odd thing today. it's been so localized. on this date, april 3rd , 1974 , we had the original super outbreak , 148 tornados in 24 hours . early april can have these kind of tornados. i do have a graphic that shows why it was so much just texas today. a big spinning upper air low and its cold pocket pushing this edge eastbound. it's mainly this red and blue stationery front. those are often the focal point, that ran right through dallas. that's why all the storms that were basically producing tornados were right in the dallas/ft. worth metroplex and have pushed further off toward the north and east . they're focused right along the frontal area.

>> in watching your coverage today. you seem to say there was good news. all the sirens sounded. notification worked. they weren't as severe as the tuscaloosa sized storms we've seen. you said these were with moving slowly, about 25 miles an hour over land. and that can make a storm dwell over an area?

>> yeah, in a can make the winds linger longer. it's amazing how the tractor-trailers twirling around in the air -- i had never seen video like that. very, very lucky, if we get through this without serious injuries or fatalities, considering the kind of upward motion. and must have been pretty strong horizontal motion today.

>> dr. forbes is the man to watch when there is severe weather . thank you very much for being with us tonight.

The deal may be off for Groupon, analysts warn

? Brendan Mcdermid / Reuters / REUTERS

Groupon's shares debut on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

By Roland Jones

Groupon is offering a cut-price deal -- on its stock price.

Shares of the daily deals website have fallen some 17 percent over the past few days following reports of accounting errors at the daily deals website. Adding fuel to the fire was a report in The Wall Street Journal Tuesday that said the SEC is examining Groupon?s revision of its first set of financial results as a public company, which were released in February.

The regulator?s probe is at an early stage, the Journal said, but the newspaper noted that it follows two other revisions to Groupon?s finances made before its debut as a public company last fall.

These earnings problems are leading experts to question the reliability of the daily coupon site?s financial reporting, and even its long-term viability as a public company.

Groupon wowed investors when it went public in November -- the latest in a list of new social media companies to hit the public markets. Its share price rose above its IPO price of $20 per share to as high as $30 per share the first day of trading.

But it has since seen its share price sink 42 percent from those opening levels. It is currently trading near $15, but could go lower, according to Jordan Rohan, a senior analyst at Stifel Nicolaus. He said Groupon?s accounting problems may seem minor, but they are actually having a major effect on the outlook for the company.

?There are very few instances where a company?s growing pains are communicated to investors in a Friday night accounting revision,? he told CNBC Monday. ?It?s not just a below-the-line revision [that] doesn?t matter; it?s that they were seeing higher refunds being requested by consumers for whatever reason.?

Groupon makes money by sending e-mails to subscribers about potential deals at retailers that it offers at a discount. A $40 meal at a restaurant, for example, maybe offered at $20. Groupon makes money by keeping approximately half the money the customer pays for the coupon, so the $40 meal could be purchased by the consumer for $20, and the restaurant and Groupon would receive $10 each.

Groupon pays companies up front and gets paid back over period of a year or so.?The problem for Groupon is some of those companies are taking the money up front and then going out of business, leaving Groupon with the cost of paying a refund.

Refund activity at Groupon has risen as it has expanded into higher-priced deals, for more expensive restaurant meals or even Lasik eye surgery. While the move expands the potential market for Groupon deals, it also increases the cost of refunds.

Rohan raises the question of whether the company?s ?addressable market? is really as large as it thinks it is, adding that there may be more ?bumps in the road? ahead for the company.

?This is a business model where [the company] is making it up or proceeding along a plan as we are following them as a public company,? he said, adding that he is concerned ?that if the addressable market isn?t as big as they said it was we will find that out in an unglamorous fashion over the next few years.?

Rakesh Agrawal, principal analyst at reDesign mobile, thinks Groupon?s business model is fundamentally flawed. The difficulty for the company now is it must maintain growth to satisfy Wall Street investors, and so there may be more pain ahead for the company, he said.

?Groupon?s problem is similar to the subprime lending problem,? he said. ?Groupon is saying we will give a restaurant cash now, but it doesn?t have to deliver a product. The businesses that sign up for Groupon are desperate, and when they go out of business, Groupon has to pay a refund.?

Agrawal estimates that there are currently between $500 million and $750 million worth of outstanding Groupons.

?Like during the subprime mortgage crisis, there?s no way of tracking them,? he said.

?It?s as if Groupon is holding on to a portfolio of subprime loans,? Agrawal continued. ?It?s holding on to a pile of risk without knowing the height of the risk it has. The only good thing is, unlike the mortgage crisis, Groupon is not large enough to have any systemic effects on the economy.?

Agrawal says Groupon could see, in a worst case scenario, major credit card companies refuse to do business with it because they see potential liabilities for their businesses.

?The credit card companies may look at the pile of risk associated with Groupon and say they are not going to be associated with it,? Agrawal said. ?If they shut down the use of their payment mechanisms they could shut the company down tomorrow.?

A way for Groupon to revive its business would be to potentially partner with companies that have more stable business models, he added. They could use the cash raised in the November IPO to purchase these companies, he said.

Groupon could also devise a mechanism that removes the risk it faces -- primarily, refunds to Groupon customers -- and place it on the customer, or look more closely at the companies it does business with and refuse to do deals with ones that appear unsound, Agrawal suggested.

The difficulty for Groupon going forward is it faces competition from other coupon and deal providers, such as Living Social.

Agrawal says Living Social is in a better position than Groupon because?it?s not a public company, and so can play around with business models without the need to show strong growth to Wall Street investors. It also has a heavyweight backer with deep pockets: Amazon.com.

Groupon?s troubles are an example of how investors haven?t learned from the dot-com bubble, Agrawal said.

?Groupon investors were attracted to strong revenue growth at Groupon, but they didn?t learn that you can easily show rapid revenue growth by simply giving money away,? he said. ?Or in this case, by giving away money from small businesses.?
