Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Academic Achievement ...

Children who participate in vigorous physical activity, such as sports,
perform better in school, according to a new study released today by the
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The examination of
activity and physical education (PE) compared to academic achievement
shows the most active kids more often have better grades. The study is
published in the August issue of Medicine & Science in Sports &
Exercise ?, the official journal of ACSM.

The study was conducted to determine the effect of physical education class enrollment and overall physical activity on academic achievement. The link between activity and academic performance was most significant when kids met Healthy People 2010 (HP2010) guidelines for vigorous activity 20 minutes a day, at least three days a week. Grades were not affected among kids who were moderately active for 30 minutes at least five days a week.

Two hundred fourteen middle school-aged students participated, all of whom were randomly assigned to a PE course for either the first (August to mid-January) or second (mid-January to June) semester of the academic year. The research team measured students' physical activity in and outside school in 30-minute blocks, and compared their individual grades in core subjects, such as English, world studies, science and mathematics.

"Physical education and activity during the school day may reduce boredom and help keep kids attention in the classroom," said Dawn Podulka Coe, Ph.D., the study's lead author. "We were expecting to find that students enrolled in PE would have better grades because of the opportunity to be active during the school day. But, enrollment in PE alone did not influence grades. The students who performed better academically in this study were the most active, meaning those who participated in a sport or other vigorous activity at least three times a week."

Most of the vigorous activity was achieved outside the classroom, in sports such as soccer, football, basketball and baseball/softball. Since academic performance was favorably influenced by this level of activity, the researchers suggest incorporating vigorous activity in PE classes.

"This is a good tool for all of us-parents, teachers and researchers alike-to understand what motivates students and possibly coordinate their activity and academic needs," said Coe.

The American College of Sports Medicine is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. More than 20,000 international, national, and regional members are dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

Study shows official measures of American poverty off-base

Study shows official measures of American poverty off-base [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 8-Aug-2012

For more than 45 years, the poor in this country have been identified by the U.S. Census Bureau's Official Poverty Measure a tool that determines America's poverty rate based on pretax money income, which does not reflect all the resources at a family's disposal.

That method of calculating who is poor and who is not has been under fire by researchers for years because it doesn't calculate the benefits of anti-poverty programs such as food stamps and housing subsidies into its formula. In response to the criticism, the Census Bureau released in fall 2011 the Supplemental Poverty Measure to more accurately assess poverty in America. A culmination of more than three decades of research on poverty measurement, the supplemental measure is used as a complement, not a replacement, for the Official Poverty Measure.

Though the new supplemental measure uses a definition of income that is conceptually closer to resources available for consumption than pretax money income, a new study by University of Notre Dame Economist James X. Sullivan finds that even the Supplementary Poverty Measure provides an inaccurate reflection of deprivation in this country. Sullivan argues that looking at what people consume the housing, food and other goods they are able to enjoy provides a more accurate indicator of who is struggling to make ends meet.

"We find that the Supplementary Poverty Measure adds to the ranks as 'poor' people those who have higher consumption levels and are more likely to be college graduates, to own a home and a car, to live in a larger housing unit, and to have other more favorable characteristics than those who are dropped from the definition of poverty," says Sullivan, whose research examines the consumption, saving and borrowing behavior of poor households in the U.S., and how welfare and tax policy affect the well-being of the poor.

The new study is published in the latest issue of the Journal of Economic Perspectives. Sullivan's co-author is Bruce Meyer of the University of Chicago.

An accurate measure of poverty is critically important the poverty rate is often cited by policymakers, researchers and advocates who are evaluating social programs that account for more than a half trillion dollars in government spending.

Both the official poverty measure and the Supplemental Poverty Measure use income as the basis for determining poverty, which does not capture differences over time or across households in wealth accumulation, ownership of durable goods such as houses and cars, or access to credit.

"Our research shows that consumption appears to be a better predictor of deprivation than income; in particular, material hardship and other adverse family outcomes are more severe for those with low consumption than for those with low income. Consumption also appears to be more accurately reported than income for the most disadvantaged families."

Straight from a JoBro's mouth! Day after Us Weekly reported that Nick Jonas?was a frontrunner to fill one of the two vacant seats at the judges' table of?"American Idol,"?the singer confirmed the possibility -- and his unabashed enthusiasm! -- via Twitter on Saturday.

"The rumors are true ? I am being considered to be a judge on American Idol," Jonas, 19, wrote to his 4.6 million followers. "And it would be a dream come true if it happens. #nickonidol."

39-year-old Williams (who has produced hit records for Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Gwen Stefani), meanwhile, is currently negotiating his contract. "Everything is looking good," a source said.
