(AP) ? Four siblings killed in a shooting rampage at a Texas roller rink were remembered Saturday as a part of a tight-knit family, even as the hundreds gathered in an Arkansas church to mourn them tried to make sense of the tragedy.

More than 400 people attended a service for Trini Do, 29, her sisters, Lynn Ta, 16, and Michelle Ta, 28, and her brother, Hien Ta, 21. Trini Do's estranged husband, Tan Do, 35, shot her and her siblings during a birthday party for their 11-year-old son and then killed himself.

Police in Grand Prairie, Texas, have said they believe the shooting was planned and followed years of domestic violence. Trini Do received a protective order in December against her husband, but she had it withdrawn earlier this year against a prosecutor's advice and wanted to give him another chance, an aunt has said.

The fifth victim in the shooting rampage, Thuy Nguyen, 25, was Trini Do's sister-in-law. She will be buried in Vietnam.

Four others were wounded in the rampage, but police said their injuries were not life-threatening.

The siblings' deaths have shaken the immigrant community in western Arkansas, where more than 1,300 Vietnamese live in the Fort Smith area. Trini Do and her siblings moved to Fort Smith from Vietnam in 1994.

Their friends and relatives gathered Saturday in the Sacred Heart of Mary Church in nearby Barling. A choir performed a hymn in Vietnamese entitled "Coming Home" as the caskets were escorted into the auditorium. Children carried framed photos of the dead, and a procession of relatives followed. Many youth tied white strips of cloth around their foreheads as a sign of respect.

The Rev. Peter Quang Le, in a homily delivered primarily in Vietnamese, described how many were still in disbelief after the shootings, even after seeing the bodies of the dead.

"We cannot understand it," he said.

Le asked the audience not to be angry or seek revenge, but to pray for the victims and their family.

"The psychological wounds because of violence in the minds of (the Ta) family will endure all their lives," he said.

Everyone in the auditorium stood, raised their right hand and turned toward Le as he touched the chest of Hoi Ta, the siblings' father, and prayed. Ta stood in silence, his arms crossed and his shirt sleeves rolled.

When the caskets were opened at the end of the service, Hoi Ta led a long line of mourners to the bodies. He leaned into the faces of his children and whispered a few quiet words to each.

Trini Do's aunt, Janice Tran, and other relatives remembered her as a good-natured person who worked two jobs and loved to travel.

"When you talked to her, you know what kind of person (she was)," Tran said.

Relatives remembered Lynn Ta, who attended a Fort Smith high school, for her smile and passion for taking photos with her friends. Michelle Ta loved to shop and cook, they said. Hien Ta was an avid swimmer and basketball player.

The siblings were among about 30 friends and family who attended the private party at the rented roller rink. A DJ at the rink told The Associated Press that guests had just finished singing "Happy Birthday" to the couple's son when Tan Do spoke to him briefly, then pulled out a gun and shot Trini Do and her relatives.

One of Trini Do's four surviving siblings was wounded in the rampage and remains hospitalized, Tran said. Trini and Tran Do's son and his 3-year-old sister were not injured in the shootings and have been in the care of other relatives. Tran said they were at the funeral.

Dissecting dyslexia: Linking reading to voice recognition

Friday, July 29, 2011

When people recognize voices, part of what helps make voice recognition accurate is noticing how people pronounce words differently. But individuals with dyslexia don't experience this familiar language advantage, say researchers.

The likely reason: "phonological impairment."

Tyler Perrachione with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology explains, "Even though all people who speak a language use the same words, they say those words just a little bit differently from one another--what is called 'phonetics' in linguistics."

Phonetics is concerned with the physical properties of speech. Listeners are sensitive to phonetic differences as part of what makes a person's voice unique. But individuals with dyslexia have trouble recognizing these phonetic differences, whether a person is speaking a familiar language or a foreign one, Perrachione says.

As a Ph.D. candidate in Neuroscience at MIT, Perrachione recently examined the impacts of phonological impairment through experiments funded by the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Education and Human Resources.

He and colleague Stephanie Del Tufo as well as Perrachione's MIT research advisor John Gabrieli hypothesized that if voice recognition by human listeners relies on phonological knowledge, then listeners with dyslexia would be impaired when identifying voices speaking their native language as compared to listeners without dyslexia.

They also theorized that listeners with dyslexia hearing a foreign language would be no more impaired in voice recognition than listeners without dyslexia, because both groups would lack specific familiarity with how the foreign language was supposed to sound.

The journal Science reports their findings online today in an article titled "Human voice recognition depends on language ability."

For their research study, the MIT scientists trained individuals with and without dyslexia to recognize the voices of people speaking either the listeners' native language of English or an unfamiliar foreign language, Mandarin Chinese. In each language, participants learned to associate five talkers' voices with unique cartoon avatars and were subsequently tested on their ability to correctly identify those voices.

The listeners were either typically-developing readers or individuals who experienced reading difficulties and dyslexia growing up.

The neuroscientists found individuals with dyslexia were significantly worse at being able to consistently recognize the voices of the English speakers. They were about the same as listeners without dyslexia at recognizing the Chinese voices; both groups were very poor at recognizing voices speaking an unfamiliar language.

"It is remarkable that individuals with dyslexia are no better able to identify voices speaking a familiar language than a foreign one," says Perrachione. "It is also very interesting that the reason for this is that they are less accurate at voice recognition than individuals who don't have dyslexia."

The result reaffirms the theory that the underlying deficit in dyslexia isn't about the act of reading per se, but instead involves difficulty with how sounds of spoken language are heard and processed in the dyslexic brain.

Contemporary theories of dyslexia often propose a "phonological deficit" as the reason some people struggle to translate written images into meaningful language. The idea is that individuals with dyslexia tend to do poorly on tests that ask them to decode words using conventional phonetic rules, thereby resulting in reading delays because of difficulties connecting language sounds to letters.

What theories of dyslexia have not been able to convincingly explain, say the researchers, is why there is no evident difficulty in the ability to perceive and produce speech among people with dyslexia. This is especially curious if the ability to recognize phonological sounds is impaired.

"Our results are the first to explicitly link impairment in reading ability to impairment in ecologically processing spoken language," says Perrachione. "The results suggest that the source of a phonological deficit might be in dyslexic individuals' difficulties learning the consistent properties of speech sounds as spoken by an individual talker."

Understanding these findings could help individuals with dyslexia in a variety of settings.

"Lots of research has shown that individuals with dyslexia have more trouble understanding speech when there is noise in the background," says Perrachione. "These results suggest that trouble following a specific voice might be part of the cause. Teachers and other educators can be sensitive to this during classroom instruction where noise from other classmates might make it disproportionately difficult for children with dyslexia to follow what is going on in a lesson."

Moreover, these findings suggest that individuals with dyslexia may find it difficult to notice consistent properties of speech sounds during learning. If further research verifies this trouble noticing consistency, it might suggest a specific direction for slowing or stopping early speech and language difficulties for young children at risk of dyslexia.

Book Review Of Stuart Nachbar's Book About Education And Politics |

Stuart Nachbar has produced a curious novel inside the Sex Ed Chronicles. Employing a backdrop of 1980 New Jersey, we are introduced to the murky world of school politics. He has selected the contentious subject of compulsory Sex Education, nonetheless the topic could equally have been Religion or Evolution. All are subjects which have strong backers and equally strong detractors.

Schools and School Boards may not be the media favorites that the House or Senate might be. But make no mistake, the concerns are as hotly contested, as well as the tactics utilised by the protagonists just as dirty because the large league politicians, maybe even dirtier, due to the lack of media attention.

The main character is rookie journalist Greg Mandell, just out of college, and working for not significantly cash as a reporter for The Ocean Republic, a modest New Jersey newspaper. The author makes use of Greg in an interesting way, he is by no implies the hero, he is the conduit by way of which the story flows. The style of writing is innovative, the story unfolds in modest nibbles every single 1 prefixed with a title and tagline, much within the fashion of newspaper stories.

The action takes spot among January and June in 1980. The New Jersey School Board determine to explore whether or not or not to include Sex Ed as aspect of its standard curriculum. Some schools have already adopted the subject and some have not. To resolve the issue a series of public forums are planned to ensure that the matter may be decided. There is a quiet certainty that though there will be several grumbles the majority will likely be in favor of teaching Sex Ed.

Rookie Greg Mandell is given the task of covering the Sex Ed story, an assignment that he really doesn?t wish to do. He speedily discovers that few wish to talk openly about the subject.

What looks at first sight to be a boring and mundane assignment quickly erupts into a firestorm of controversy when a supposed parent-backed group referred to as PAST get involved. Led by the bombastic and bigoted rich widow Carolyn Lattimore, PAST are firmly committed to abolishing Sex Ed in schools, and to attain their aim set out to establish their members on the a variety of school boards.

Caught in the middle of the fray can be a young history teacher, Andi Gilardi, who becomes the centerpiece of PAST?s diatribe after she permits some students to post a Sex Ed test in the school newspaper.

Greg finds himself torn in between openly supporting Ms. Gilardi and jeopardizing his job, or supporting PAST who?re significant advertisers with the newspaper.

The Sex Ed Chronicles is really a extremely thought-provoking function, the author has done a really fine job of writing concerning the political process, along with the fashion in which political skirmishes take spot. Like a chess game, mating your opponent?s King is simple as soon as you have picked off the Pawns!

Wonderful read, and if I was an English teacher this could be a book that would I would really like to evolve a class about. The possible for gaining real globe understanding from inside the pages of this novel are massive.

How to Get Language Interpretation Certification Courses - Education

These days, there has been a proliferation of institutes offering courses in language interpretation. However, before one takes the crucial decision of joining a particular course or college, one needs to conduct proper research and determine if the institute that you are joining provides training with a focus on the languages of your choice. So for example, if you are an interpreter from Chinese to Japanese, these two languages must form the core competencies of the college.

The interpreter also needs to determine if there is a particular industry in which he/she wants to make a career in. For example, one might choose to pursue an interpretation career solely in medical or tourism industry. If one is sure about ones specialization, then while short listing courses, it needs to be ensured that the course has an industry focus.

There are various levels of courses offered in the market.

It is a great idea to opt for a Bachelors? or Masters? degree, with a second language. The chosen second language is usually one?s mother tongue. The interpreter can obtain a degree from any of the recognized universities in the country, after successfully passing the exams conducted. The second language undertaken by the interpreter at degree level can be treated as target language.

Since the source language is a new foreign language for the interpreter, he has to make a choice between various foreign languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and French. Subsequently, he should undertake language certification course conducted by any of the recognized colleges or institutes. The duration of courses may vary from 6 months to 2 years. The internet is the best window for making oneself acquainted with various language courses.

Most students take a basic introductory course in translation or interpretation before applying for the certification course. You can usually complete the program in one or two years. Certificates are language-specific and are offered in various languages according to student demand. The admission process involves submission of written and oral (taped) work in both source and target language. Upon earning the Interpretation Certificate, one may consider taking professional certification or accreditation tests such as the state court interpreter certification exam. Institutes also offer non-credit workshops in preparation for these exams.

An interpreter can also undertake courses in sign language enabling them to undertake interpretation in sign language for deaf and blind. Social and community colleges also offer courses in sign language interpretation.

Getting professional certification in language interpretation can go a long way in ensuring a rewarding career. Interpreters are in demand in a variety of medical, legal, social-service organizations. While translators and interpreters usually work on a freelance basis, in some cases they might also be associated with an agency. Five Small Business Branding Myths | Brand Like A Rock Star

?

I am fortunate to speak with plenty of business owners, many of them running small and emerging businesses. Yet some of them still believe that the concept of branding doesn?t really apply to small business. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here are five?common myths surrounding small business and branding.

Myth #1 ? Branding is something that big companies do, not small businesses.

Reality ? Building a strong brand is about creating an expectation within your customer?s mind.?It has nothing to do with the size of the business. In fact, since great brands are all about satisfying emotional needs, it could be argued that branding is best done by smaller businesses who exist close to their customers. Strong small local brands can compete against, and even take down, the big boys.

Myth #2 ? Branding is expensive and requires a lot of?costly TV advertising that I can?t afford.

Reality ? Building a strong brand isn?t about advertising or money. Branding is essentially storytelling. Stories are told through a variety of means, not just through advertising. Telling your brand?s special story doesn?t have to be expensive. What is expensive is not building a strong brand. Weak brands fail to grow, collapse in the face of competition, and quickly fall victim to recessions. Failure is expensive.

Myth #3 ? I don?t need to worry about branding because my business is already different from everyone else out there.

Reality ? You might think so, but your customers (and potential customers) probably don?t see it that way. Because business owners and operators are so close to their products, they are unqualified to see their business the way real people do. Real people don?t see that big a difference between most businesses. Only businesses with well-developed brands are able to demonstrate to customers what makes them so different.

Myth #4 ? Branding is just a passing fad.

Reality ? You?re probably right. So is the internet. While you wait for it to fade away, be sure to watch as small businesses around you build strong brands, develop powerful identities, and grow beyond their founder?s wildest dreams.

Myth #5 ? If?my brand is strong, I will become too pigeonholed to grow my business.

Reality ? The ill-fated concept of being ?everything to everyone? permeates small business. Long term, it doesn?t work.? Businesses that establish a specific area of expertise are the ones that win.?Successful businesses specialize and become famous for something! Yes, that means some people won?t like you. And that?s okay, even for a small business. Once you reach the point where you can accept that you need to lose some customers to gain hundreds of others, you?ll be ready to grow.

Small businesses with solid?brands absolutely?rock. They are fun to work with because they exist?very close to their customers and can react quickly to changing conditions. They can make great things happen nearly overnight.?Some of the coolest branding success stories out there?are small businesses.

Remember, almost all rock stars start out?small too.

Bob Marley started his career playing a style of island music that didn?t even have a name.? Someone called it ?reggae?, and within a decade Bob Marley was a worldwide star.?

U2 began as a bunch of high school students who could barely play their instruments. This week they wrapped up the most profitable tour in music history.

When John met Paul at a church picnic, The Beatles were formed. They went on to change the face of music in a short decade.

Where will your small business take you? Learn more about branding your small business in the new book Brand Like a Rock Star, now available here. If you?re hesitant to order, read Chapter One for free before you buy. You can download it here absolutely free.

HK utility buys 17 pct stake in China nuke plant (AP)

HONG KONG ? Hong Kong utility CLP Holdings Ltd. said Monday it has bought a 17 percent stake in a nuclear power plant in southern China for 4.8 billion renminbi ($745 million).

CLP said its nuclear investment unit signed a deal with China Guangdong Nuclear Power Company Ltd. to buy the stake in the Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station. A total of 70 billion renminbi ($10.8 billion) is being invested in the plant.

Construction started in 2008 on the 6,000 megawatt plant in western Guangdong province, which consists of six 1,000 megawatt pressurized water reactors. The plant, which is 220 kilometers west of Hong Kong, is expected to be completed in phases from 2013 to 2017. The electricity produced will be sold locally.

The two companies already operate the coastal Daya Bay nuclear plant, which is also in Guangdong and sends most of its power to Hong Kong.

Beijing is promoting alternative energy sources such as nuclear, wind and solar to curb surging demand for imported oil and gas and to reduce environmental damage from heavy reliance on coal.

However, government officials signaled that the country's nuclear policy would stress safety over rapid development following Japan's devastating nuclear crisis, which was sparked by a huge tsunami in March that damaged a coastal power plant.

CLP sought to allay safety fears about the new plant, saying it "carefully assessed" safety standards of the design, construction and operational planning to make sure they comply with regulations.

The power plant will also follow "safety enhancement measures for withstanding extreme multiple natural disasters and strengthening capability for emergency preparedness," CLP said.

China's nuclear regulators said in June safety reviews of 28 reactors under construction should be completed by October. Thirteen operating plants were checked and given clean bills of health.

Poor Health Linked to Very Preemie Birth Stabilizes by Adolescence (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, July 26 (HealthDay News) -- Children who are born at extremely low birth weights (below 2.2 pounds) are susceptible to a number of chronic health conditions, such as asthma. But, new research suggests that between 8 and 14 years of age, any lingering chronic illness in extremely low birth weight babies tends to stay about the same -- not getting better, but also not getting worse.

Ironically, the one exception was obesity. The rate of obesity was 12 percent when the children were 8 years old, but by 14, the rate of obesity was 19 percent in the extremely low birth weight group. Rates of obesity in children who were born at normal weights were 16 percent at age 8 and 20 percent at age 14, according to the study.

"As these children get older, most conditions are stable, but they did catch up in obesity," said the study's lead author, Dr. Maureen Hack, a professor of pediatrics and co-director of high risk follow-up at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

That means that parents of children who were born at an extremely low birth weight should be aware that their children are at risk of becoming obese later in life. She said these findings suggest that in addition to a healthy diet, parents should encourage exercise in their children, to help keep weight in the normal range.

The findings are published in the July 27 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Before the 1990s, babies who were born at extremely low birth weights often didn't survive. But, changes in postnatal medical care in the 1990s improved survival for these tiny infants, according to background information in the study. What wasn't clear, however, was how these smallest of babies would do in the long term.

To get a better idea of how these children fared as they grew up, the researchers began following a group of extremely low birth weight babies who were born between 1992 through 1995 at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland.

The current study includes information from 181 of those children when they were between the ages of 8 and 14 years old. The researchers compared this group of children to a group that was the same age, but born at normal weights.

Parents filled out questionnaires regarding their child's health, and brief physical assessments were conducted.

The researchers found that the overall rates of chronic conditions remained stable from 8 to 14 years old for the extremely low birth weight children. Rates of asthma stayed the same -- at 23 percent from 8 to 14 years old for extremely low birth weight children. That trend held true even as the number of kids with asthma increased dramatically for teens born at a normal birth weight, rising from 8 percent to 17 percent.

The rates of functional limitations in the low birth weight group actually decreased during the age 8 to 14 time period, from 56 percent to 46 percent, the study found.

However, obesity rates rose. When the extremely low birth weight group was 8 years old, just 12 percent of them were obese. By 14 years, 19 percent of these children were considered obese. That compares to a 20 percent rate of obesity at age 14 for the children born at normal weights, according to the study.

Hack said the researchers aren't sure why rates of obesity increased so significantly during this time period. There are some factors that may make children born at extremely low birth weights more susceptible to gaining weight, however. She said that periods of very rapid growth at young ages may make later weight gain more likely. And, she said, previous research has shown that children who are born prematurely often exercise less than their peers born at term.

"Very low birth weight infants seem to be more at risk for obesity," said Dr. Dilek Bishku, pediatrician and vice president of medical affairs at La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago. But, she added, when they're younger, they're also at risk for malnutrition.

"We should approach the idea of catch-up weight in extremely low birth weight children with an open mind, because there's still a lot we don't know. And, this study doesn't definitively tell us what to do," she said.

Set Aside Time to Worry to Reduce Stress and Anxiety [Health]

Set Aside Time to Worry to Reduce Stress and AnxietyIt may seem silly, but if you pencil in time to worry, you may be able to cope with problems better. It's easier to postpone worrying than it is to stop worrying altogether, the theory goes.

MSNBC reports that in a study using stimulus control therapy, patients with anxiety, stress, and depressive symptoms learned to associate a specific time and place with worrying. When they caught themselves worrying, they were taught to postpone worrying and focus instead on the task at hand. When the scheduled "worry time" came around, they used that time to try to solve the problems they worried about.

This sort of compartmentalizing of their worries helped reduce anxiety and stress. Although it was a small sample (62 participants with some dropping out), the technique sounds promising (better to worry for a focused 30 minutes a day than over an exhausting 18 hours, I think).

We've recently seen stimulus control therapy applied to training ourselves to fall asleep faster, and the MSNBC article points out how these techniques are used for curbing overeating as well. These sorts of mind hacks might pave the way to better health. Photo remixed from an original by ASurroca.

Facebook was hiding its iPad app inside its iPhone app (Yahoo! News)

Apple's tablet already has its own version of Facebook, and it might be installed on your iPad right now

It appears as though the long-rumored?Facebook iPad app is indeed on its way, and its release might be even closer than we think. Technology blog TechCrunch did some digging and amongst the programming code of the?social network's iPhone app and found that the bells and whistles of the?iPad version?were embedded there, too. Using a jailbroken iPad, they were able to boot up the not-yet-announced Facebook iPad app and take it for a test drive.

The app looks to fill the gap between the stripped-down iPhone version of Facebook and the full website. A sidebar with large, touch-friendly icons help to streamline the social network experience, while the iPad's large screen real estate provides a good chunk of your friends' activity in a single bit.

Several sites have?posted guides on how to alter your iPhone Facebook app to work on an iPad, but this requires jailbreaking the device. Additionally, once we switched our Facebook app to the iPad version we were no longer able to sign in, meaning that the coding wizards at Facebook have likely shut the door on any iPad connectivity until the app is officially revealed.

Innovation Law Blog ? Blog Archive ? Patent Troll on Steroids: How ...

Posted: July 26th, 2011 | Author: Giselle Chin | Filed under: Business, Featured, Patent | No Comments ?

This American Life (TAL) is running a story this week that?is well worth?tuning in for. Some may have heard of Nathan Myhrvold during his time as IBM?s?chief strategist and chief of technology or from his $600, six-volume cookbook. But few outside IT circles would know of his ?innovative invention company??Intellectual Ventures, and how it is regarded by many in the field as the leader of patent trolls, having amassed roughly 35,000 patents since its inception in 2000.

TAL?s story?delves into the origins of the term ?patent troll? and the?rise of the patent troll industry?in America. Patent troll is a name usually given to companies that accumulate, at times, huge troves of patents and make money by threatening lawsuits.?And patent trolling is on the rise. From 2004 to 2009, the number of patent infringement lawsuits in America went up 70 percent while licensing requests went up 650 percent.

A large?proportion?of the story is spent on discussing the two sides of Intellectual Ventures, as a patent troll company and a legitimate business that allows inventors without sufficient resources or legal savvy to cash in on their patents. Intellectual Ventures buys and collects patents from inventors, creating a huge ?warehouse of inventions? that companies can pay for and use if they wish. In fact, Intellectual Ventures claims they are the exact opposite of patent trolls as they are on the inventors? side. As such, they themselves, so they constantly claim, do not initiate patent infringement suits.

What IV does instead, TAL alleges, is create shell companies, like Oasis Research or even recent patent bad guy Lodsys, to?whom IV sells its patents to. These shell companies get the supposedly dirty trolling work done and IV then receives its cut.

As much as we would all heavily frown upon patent trolls, and perhaps even sell or not buy Intellectual Venture shares out of principle, what these trolls do, in?enforcing?patent rights, even if the troll has no interest in what the patent itself is for, is entirely legal. So what was more disconcerting for me was not finding out that people would do questionable things because they are greedy (cause who knew?), but that the underlying American patent system facilitates it.

Originally, and theoretically, patents were intended to make it safe to share ideas. Their purpose was to encourage innovation from inventors. And to a certain extent, I?m sure it does. But with the rise of patent trolls, arguably like Intellectual Ventures, according to?TAL, the patent system isn?t promoting innovation, but stifling it.

Because as noble as Intellectual Ventures? claims are, protecting patents does not mean protecting invention.

?We?re at a point in the state of intellectual property where existing patents probably cover every behavior that?s happening on the Internet or our mobile phones today,? says Chris Sacca, a venture capitalist. ?[T]he averageSilicon Valleystart-up or even medium sized company, no matter how truly innovative they are, I have no doubt that aspects of what they?re doing violate patents right now. And that?s what?s fundamentally broken about this system right now.?

The TAL team brought a specific patent to David Martin, who runs a company called M-Cam, which is hired by governments, banks and business to assess patent quality. The patent the TAL team had brought to be assessed was for ?an online backup system.?

Not only did they find multiple other patents from the same time that covered extremely similar things, like ?efficiently backing up files using multiple computer systems? or ?mirroring data in a remote data storage system?, they also found?different?patents?with different patent numbers but with the same title: ?System and method for backing up computer files over a wide area computer network.?

Martin says about 30 percent of U.S.patents are basically on things that have already been invented. A more ludicrous example is the 2000 patent on making toast, patent number?6080436, the ?Bread Refreshing Method.?

As well, many patents are so broad, engineers say, everyone?s guilty of infringement. It seems like patents are doled out like candy at Halloween, the good mixed with the bad but equal before the law. This means any business, and particularly tech companies, big or small, will eventually and almost inevitably walk onto a patent landmine. That?s why big technology companies are now spending billions of dollars buying up huge patent portfolios in order to defend themselves.

But it is in the little guy where the American patent system will stifle innovation the most.

A patent lawsuit against or by the likes of Apple or Google would hardly raise an eyebrow as such mega-corporations can afford the multi-million dollar bill of going to court. Not so for the small or medium start-up companies who can ill afford these costs. Such patent infringement suits slows innovation as it becomes harder for small companies to prosper, increases the risk and stress of trying something new, and if the start-up survives the nearly inevitable settlement, the suit increases the cost of making their product.?Patent trolls have the capacity to completely obliterate start-up companies.

The patent granting system in Canada is currently not as generous as the U.S., and patent rights are not a constitutional right here as it is down there. But for better or for worse, the scope of what qualifies for patent protection is expanding here, as is the patent lawyering industry. There is much Canada can learn from some of the patent problems in the US, like over-generousness, broadness and repetition. And hopefully trolls will not crop up here, as no matter where they are, they ugly.

PPC Marketing ? Popular Method Of ... - Internet Online Business

PPC marketing or pay per click marketing is the most popular method of advertisement employed by various websites on the Internet. PPC marketing may often be referred to as pay for position, cost per click or pay for performance. But regardless of the term used, PPC marketing is the online advertiser?s medium of choice for promoting products and services to online consumers.

PPC marketing is beneficial to both the advertiser and the consumer. Advertisers using PPC marketing only need to pay for the actual click throughs linked to their sites from search engines. At the same time as consumers are relieved of having to get annoying emails or pop-up ads for products and services.

When an online consumer searches for a specific product or service on the Internet, corresponding PPC marketing ads are also displayed alongside the results generated by the search engine. This forms a highly targeted consumer group that is more likely to purchase a specific product or service. In addition, websites get to limit their advertisement costs with the use of PPC marketing. PPC marketing is truly a winning solution for both parties.

Possible drawbacks of PPC marketing

Despite the obvious advantages of PPC marketing, there are possible drawbacks that can cancel out its benefits. One of the most common problems associated with PPC marketing is the inexperience of many people attempting to use this profitable advertisement method. Simply submitting PPC marketing ads to a search engine such as google, does not make up the entire campaign.

PPC marketing requires a calculated and systematic approach to setting up ads. PPC marketing involves the use of keywords and biddings in order to get top placement on a search engine. Getting top search engine placement helps boost traffic to a website that can easily translate into profit.

Without the necessary experience and knowledge to carry out a typical PPC marketing ad, may turn into an expensive campaign that does not convert into profit. PPC marketing ads also require continuous funding, as discontinued payments will also result in discontinued ads. This can be unfavorable for a website that has already built high rankings with their PPC marketing ads.

Bidding on keywords can also be quite costly, as the growing number of websites on the web struggle against each other to bid on the most popular keyword for their PPC marketing ad. Obviously small business websites are at a disadvantage here since big business websites are able to pay more for popular keywords related to their site. This is because most small businesses only set aside a small portion of their capital for advertisement, putting them at a disadvantage.

Running an effective PPC marketing campaign

There are a number of things that a website should consider when running an effective PPC marketing campaign. It is important to develop a marketing plan in order to get the most return on investment from PPC marketing. Selecting the most appropriate keywords that relate to the site?s business is essential in PPC marketing.

However, simply choosing the most popular keywords does not necessarily translate into profit. Selecting more specific keywords that will put a site within the first ten results of a search also gets greater awareness from online consumers. In addition, it doesn?t cost as much as getting the top spot for PPC marketing.

It is also important that a website constantly monitors the performance of their PPC marketing campaign. This will help the site modify any existing PPC marketing ad to make it more productive. At the same time any PPC marketing ad that has not proven effective can be immediately discontinued. Altering PPC marketing ads is a continuous process that many websites do in order to increase their return on investment.

Getting professional help with PPC marketing

The popularity of PPC marketing has given rise to professionals offering PPC marketing services for small and big businesses. Hiring a professional PPC marketing company is advisable for a small business without experience in PPC marketing. Most PPC marketing companies offer reasonable rates for their services and at the same time produce acceptable results.

A PPC marketing professional can attend to all the details commonly involved in a PPC marketing campaign. Handling a PPC marketing campaign is a time consuming process that can be overwhelming for a small business. A PPC marketing professional can help set up a PPC marketing campaign and later on train someone from within the business to handle it to ensure its continued success.

Variety of Windows and Roofing

Tweet This There are many different types of windows designed to suit your needs. The double-hung sash window has two parts or rather sashes that overlap and slide up and down inside the frame; whereas, the horizontal sliding sash window has two or more sashes. Another window that also has a sash is the casement which hinged sash swing in and out.

Casement windows come in the form of the awning and hopper window. The awning window is a casement window that is hinged above and swings outward while the hopper window is hung at the bottom and opens to the outside.

There is also the tilt and slide window which resembles a door because the sash tilts inward and slides horizontally. On the other hand, the tilt and turn window can either tilt inwards or open inwards. This is common in Germany and other European countries.

Like PA windows, there is variety of roofing to choose from. However, before you begin to select the best roofing, you have to consider first what type of roof you want. Your roof can either be flat, low pitch, medium pitch, or steep. Once you have decided on the type of roof you want, you can easily select the right roofing for your home.

One of the most popular kinds of Pennsylvania roofing is cedar. Cedar does not only exude beauty, but it also offers durability. Cedar is resistant to insect infestations and damaging UV rays of the sun. It can also withstand strong winds and heavy snow. It used to be a flammable risk, but it now comes with a fire retardant. Moreover, it also offers good insulation. Its soft wood is structured in such a way that it is filled with air which acts as its insulator. With cedar shingles, you will feel warm during winter and cooler during summer.

Aside from selecting the right roofing for your home, you could also ask a Pennsylvania roofer to install a gutter system in your home, especially if it is situated in an area where there is frequent rain. Gutters are used to channel water away from your home, keeping it dry and preventing moisture. The gutter system is made up of the gutter channel where water is carried into the downspout which directs it toward the drains.

Greece gets new bailout with private sector help (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Eurozone leaders on Thursday agreed to a sweeping deal that will grant Greece a massive new bailout ? but likely make it the first euro country to default ? and radically reshape the currency union's rescue fund, allowing it to act pre-emptively when crises build up.

The deal resolves a political deadlock between Europe's top economic authorities over how to save Greece that had investors worried the debt crisis would spin out of control. Faced with the danger of big economies like Italy becoming unstable, the officials sought to outdo expectations at an emergency meeting in Brussels.

The eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund will give Greece a second bailout worth euro109 billion ($155 billion), on top of the euro110 billion granted a year ago.

Banks and other private investors will contribute some euro50 billion ($71 billion) to the rescue package until 2014 by either rolling over Greek bonds that they hold, swapping them for new ones with lower interest rates or selling the bonds back to Greece at a low price.

"For the first time since the beginning of this crisis, we can say that the politics and the markets are coming together," said European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Initial reaction from markets and analysts to Thursday's deal was cautiously positive. The euro, which had rallied sharply on expectation of the deal, rose further to gain 1.2 percent against the dollar.

The "summit conclusions surprise by their size and range," Marie Diron, senior economic adviser to the Ernst & Young, said in a note. "The measures imply significant private sector involvement and very large further support from the EU. All politically acceptable measures are being used."

The deal on involving private creditors is widely expected to be considered a "selective default" by the ratings agencies, making Greece the first euro country to ever be in default ? if likely only for a short period of time.

Because of that, the eurozone will back up any new Greek bonds issued to the banks with guarantees. Those guarantees are necessary because Greek banks use Greek government debt as collateral for emergency support from the European Central Bank. Those bonds would no longer work as collateral if hit with a default rating, meaning Greek banks would lose the ECB support and quickly collapse.

In the case of bond rollovers or swaps, the new Greek bonds issued to the banks would have long maturities of up to 30 years and low interest rates, according to the Institute of International Finance, the group representing the private sector creditors. French President Nicolas Sarkozy estimated the rates would average 4.5 percent.

That will give Greece more time to get its struggling economy back in shape and cut some 21 percent of its future debt burden.

Leaders agreed to provide the new eurozone rescue loans to Greece at a 3.5 percent interest rate and with maturities of between 15 and 30 years. They will have an additional grace period of 10 years.

"I think this is extremely important to ensure the debt sustainability of Greece," Barroso said.

In addition to the new aid for Greece, the leaders also overhauled their bailout fund, giving it the power to intervene in countries before they are in full-blown crisis mode.

The changes to the fund are a big turnaround, especially for Germany, which had blocked any such move earlier this year. They show how worried the eurozone is that its debt crisis could spill over from small countries like Greece, Ireland and Portugal to big ones like Spain or Italy. Bailouts for those countries would likely overwhelm the eurozones financial capacity.

To avoid ever being in that position, the EFSF will be able to provide a "precautionary program," such as short-term credit lines, for struggling countries. Such credit lines could be very helpful for Italy and Spain if they ever experience a funding squeeze, showing investors that support is available if things get tight.

They could also make it easier for Ireland and Portugal to start raising money again on financial markets once their own rescue programs run out.

The EFSF will also be able to recapitalize banks in countries that haven't been bailed out, supporting them during a banking crisis without forcing them into a full program that usually requires massive cuts and economic reforms. That may make it easier for certain countries to request help before market panic has reached its peak.

On top of that, the eurozone can in certain circumstances use the EFSF to buy bonds on the secondary market, taking pressure off countries experiencing an investor sell-off. That was a role that the ECB had reluctantly fulfilled until a few months ago, when it abandoned its bond buying program amid growing frustration with leaders' slow efforts to contain the crisis.

Leaders said Portugal and Ireland will also get lower interest rates on their bailout loans, but stressed that there won't be any private sector involvement in their support programs.

"Private sector involvement will be limited to Greece, and Greece only," EU President Herman Van Rompuy said.

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou greeted Thursday's deal. "The European Union has taken significant decisions for Greece and for the eurozone," he told reporters. "Today's decisions safeguard the viability of our national debt."

However, some analyst questioned whether the agreement was enough to make Greece's massive debts, some euro350 billion or 160 percent of economic output, truly sustainable in the long-run.

"If successful, the program will bring a significant reduction of Greece's debt stock although, on its own, it is unlikely to be enough to bring Greek debt back to sustainable levels," Ernst & Young's Diron said.

How To Save Money On Electrical Repairs

Tweet This Owning a home takes a lot of work. Whether you own a condo or single family home, you still have to fix things every now and again this is unless you pay someone else to fix them for you. Although hiring out for help with your home repairs, i.e. electrical repairs, is certainly the easy way out, it can become increasingly costly to afford, if money should ever become an issue for you. However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with hiring a repair person, but keep in mind not all repair jobs in your home require the use of an electrician. It is the intention of this article to provide tips on how to save money on your electrical repairs.

The first and perhaps most obvious way to save money on your electrical repairs can be realized if you were to handle the repairs yourself. Meaning, you do the repairs. If you are looking to replace switches, lighting and outlets, you should consider performing the repairs yourself. Doing so will not only save you money in the short run (i.e. consultation fees) but also in the long run by avoiding subsequent repair work. There are plenty of places whereby you can find the information necessary to carry out your minor repair tasks, including instructional guides on the Internet as well as the utilization of repair specialists at your local home improvement store.

Another way to save money on your electrical repairs can be attributed to the utilization of a trained electrician or electrical contractor. If you are planning to install a fuse box or power panels or you need someone to fix your ill-fated repair attempt, this would be the time to call for professional repair help. In this instance, calling an electrician or contractor can and will save you money over the long haul as opposed to you attempting the repair yourself.

Although attempting home repairs, especially those of an electrical nature, is certainly an admirable feat, you have to know when and where such a strategy is optimally appropriate. In fact, sometimes it is not only more appropriate but also financial advantageous to utilize an electrician or contractor for your repairs as doing so can save you money over the long haul, particularly with respect to avoiding damages and subsequent additional costs to you. Long story short, if the repair is small and minor, try to do it yourself, but if it requires multi-room coordination or extensive work, call a professional. That is how you save money on electrical repairs.
