Falling branch kills schoolgirl

A schoolgirl has died after being hit by a 15ft falling tree branch in Cambridgeshire.

It happened while the girl, who was a pupil at Sawtry Community College, was in Middletons Road Recreation Ground, Yaxley, on Thursday at about 1440 BST.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Peterborough City Hospital, where she died.

The case has been passed to the coroner. Sawtry Community College was closed on Thursday because of a strike.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: "We were called to an incident at Middletons road recreation ground in Yaxley at 1440 BST.

"Officers attended the scene where a girl had been hit by a falling tree branch.

"She was taken to Peterborough City Hospital where she later died.

"It is not being treated as suspicious and the case will now be passed onto the coroner for the girl to be identified."
