Perfect Vision and the Gift of Lasik | Articles Cottage

One of the most precious organs of our body is our eyes. This magnificent organ is uniquely constructed which bestows us the chance to view and admire everything around us. Vision is a very delicate emotion and enables us to appreciate God?s creation. There are several millions of people who cannot fully utilize God?s gift without synthetic substances like spectacles and lenses owing to the defect in their eyes. For such people, has been designed the Eye Laser surgery or the Lasik surgery.

Lasik is a very significant invention which can correct the defects of the eye namely myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Lasik is the short form for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis and is performed by experienced ophthalmologists with the help of laser rays and is a kind of refractive surgery similar to procedures like photorefractive keratectomy.

The popularity of Lasik can mainly be attributed to the lack of pain during and after the surgery which certainly encourages a good number of the patients to try out the procedure. Also, the procedure delivers fast results as in the patient receives good vision immediately from the very next day which encourages persons having vision problems to try out.

Lasik surgery involves a thorough inspection of the patient?s eye to determine his/her cornea thickness. The surgery usually starts by creating a flap in the cornea, done by a device called microkeratome. Laser can also be used for the purpose.

Excimer laser is used to adjust the shape of cornea by removing the required amount of corneal tissues, subsequent to the cornea flap being pulled back. Ultraviolet rays of the excimer laser does the job of reshaping the cornea for normal vision.

The clear vision is provided to the patient when the cornea is reshaped and thus the light falls directly on the retina. The flap which was made earlier is thus replaced back where the corneal tissue was removed.

Nearsighted, farsighted and people suffering from astigmatism can take advantage of the procedure. In nearsighted people, the steepness of the cornea is reduced near normalcy whereas in farsighted people the cornea is tried to be made steeper. Astigmatism correction is also possible by using excimer laser wherein the irregular cornea is brought to the normal shape.

Before the Lasik surgery, your eye surgeon will give you a thorough eye checkup to analyze your eye health, the amount of vision correction required and the laser ablation that is necessary to correct your vision. Your doctor should specifically look out for any dryness of the eyes and if it is not present too, the patient should definitely take precautions to reduce eye dryness after surgery.

Lasik operation is a very simple and easy process which is completed in less than 5-8 minutes and does not involve any pain. Most of the patients start to get their clear vision from day one of the operation but some of the patients take a little more time. Lasik surgery is a boon to people having eye defects wherein they can again be proud to view this world through their very own eyes.

The author composed a large quantity of articles on Lasik and many other types of eye surgical procedures. He is in particular interested in special technical factors of eye laser, or Augenlaser as it is labeled in German, that are employed in these kinds of operations.
